Solved Image your system with free Macrium

Both appear to be stable I have used both although I have not restored with 5. I 4 you can verify your image when made. In 5 you can only verify after restore (unless I don't know how to do it). In 4 you have to do a linux recovery disk, in 5 you can do a linux recovery or can do a win PE disk(if you download WAIK in the free version) and without WAIK in the paid version. 5 has a clone feature. As best I can recall those are the major differences.

Get V5 - it is easier to use. And if you burn the WinPE CD, you cannot only use that to recover from an image but also use it to make images (on systems where you do not want to install Macrium).

+I've never tried it, but can't you do that in V4 under the Linux recovery?

The V4.2 Linux CD is only a recovery wizard. I do not have a V5 Linux CD right now (it is in Germany). So I cannot try it. But I do not remember seeing an imaging option - although I may be wrong.

I had thought there was an imaging option but, I may be wrong. I haven't had to use it in quite a while, thank goodness.

I have been using v5 since it was launched with no problems. There have been issues with some setups but these are quickly fixed. I would go with v5.

The Linux disk is very basic and only has recovery options. It also sometimes has difficulty recognizing some disks. Use the PE version. It involves a 1.7GB download of the WAIK but is well worth it.

It has more features than Macrium free and I tried it out last year. I think I dropped it because the rescue disk couldn't find my backup drive. That may have changed now so it may be worth a try.

I think the best thing is to try them both and choose which you prefer.

I have used macrium , but it doesn't work on my current set up.

I now use Paragon v12 - it has a new engine and is unbelievably fast.

I don't think there is a free version of v12 yet.

Paragon v11 free ( it is called backup and recovery 2012 ) works well, tho is nowhere near the speed of the new v12.


The free version of macrium has a mechanism for making a winpe disc. You do need to download the gigantic WAIK (1.7gb) to be able to do that, tho.

If you want to use winpe3.1 ( it has better support for AFD , for example ), you will need to download the WAIK supplement as well, which is another 1.3gb.

Paragon gave me a free download.

It was an email harvesting trick - they never supplied the key that should have enabled their software.
I made several attempts when I had nothing else.
Now I have Macrium I ignore anything coming from Paragon.

I don't think so. I downloaded and ran it last year. Admittedly they are pushy with their email marketing.

I use free Paragon at times. It has more function but it is also more complex to use. It is also slower than free Macrium (for full images). But it can do differentials - also incrementals, but those are no good.

I would agree with WHS. I tried Paragon a long time ago now and decided on using Windows own imaging and free Macrium. I think Macrium V5 (even the free which I use) is quite feature rich.
You need to see what suites you but I always thought the (old) Paragon imaging could be a little intimidating to new users.

Thanks guys, I went ahead with Macrium v5 a few days ago and it was exactly what I expected. Simple, straightforward, no BS imaging program and best of all it's free!

Was that image done with Macrium - if yes, did you also image/restore the 100MB system partition.

Yes with macrium free, is there anyway to check if the system partition was included? I dont remember if it was but I think that I probably did not include it when I made the image of my c and d drives last month.

I am using HBCD15.1 in Min Xp mode to get into the macrium restore wizard, once there I can navigate to my back up images on my external drive, but I was confused as to where to restore them to,, active or primary, etc. I did not see a 100mb partition. Thanks.

Without the 100MB active system partition, it will not boot. Check first on the system from where the image came whether that 100MB partition exists. Then make 2 seperat images of that and of C: (you can use the one you have).

On the new system you will first have to define those 2 partitions before you can rstore them. The 100MB partition is the active partition.

But that is not the end of your troubles. The whole project will probably die in the drivers and the Win7 product activation. What I suggest is to install Windows 8 Consumer Preview on the old XP system. Then you have a clean slate.
