Q1: If i ran the scan for, lets say a week, and completed about 50% and i stopped it and fixed the bad sectors he found, will that help?

No, not neccessarily - you don't know where these sectors reside on the disk, so you have no idea whether you have fixed the problems.

There aren't any shortcuts. You need to do this:

1. Copy off all files
2. Run a complete chkdsk /R without interrupting it.

Anything less is an incomplete approach.

You can try Test Disk. Test Disk through Parted Magic will give the steps needed to start it.

Wholeheartedly agree with both http://www.sevenforums.com/member.php?u=184974 and http://www.sevenforums.com/member.php?u=108345. Whenever you suspect there is some sort of mechanical damage with the drive, you always recover files first (starting with files you think are most important). This is because you never know how many more times you'll be able to access the data (without opening it up). All the better if you can do a clone/image of the whole thing.

After you get a copy of all the data you want off of it, then you can worry about recovering the drive itself. That is, if it's even worth it. Drives are cheap.

Testdisk/Photorec can do wonders. If you can manage, always get the most recent, as the author fairly routinely updates:

Hi

I did the test disk, and it went fine and recognized the lost partition,
but after rebooting i ran rescue kit but nothing changed, it didn't recognize the lost partition!

any suggestions guys?
maybe a tool on the Parted Magic CD or something other than Rescue kit?

Parted Magic also contains PhotoRec. You could see if you can recover the files using that software after mounting your drives. PhotoRec - CGSecurity

Well, after some messing around in PM, i tried rescue kit again
and i was able to access the partition. but same as the first time i used Rescue kit, few of this partition's files are missing. I don't think i will be able to get to them through another program. The only way i think it might work is formatting the hard Disk and trying to recover the files!

the files i want are very very small, the are txt.

what do you guys think?

You could try formatting and then using PhotoRec. There is some risk that you will lose some data. Typically, 80-90% of the drive can be recovered after a format.

PhotoRec works, but i think you can't pick a certain file to recover!
you have to recover the whole thing!
I think i will format and use program the Allows me to choose certain file to recover.
