All downloads "contain a virus" and get deleted on completion

Hello there,

I'm trying to download some OS photo software onto my machine (Rawtherapee), and on completion it is deleted and I'm told the file has a virus.

I don't believe this is true because everything I've tried to download recently has told me it has a virus and is deleted.

I think it's something to do with my firewall or AV software (AVG free).

Anyone got any pointers as to how I can let the files through?

Cheers,

Myky

PS: Sorry - my OS is Windows 7, and I've tried both Firefox and IE.

you have to disable your anti-virus program, but beware if the download does have a virus your computer might get infected. Un-install AVG Free, reboot, reset all firewall settings to default. Then re-install AVG free. see if that works.

Let's get a second opinion re the state of your computer.

Please download the free version of Malwarebytes.
Update it immediately.
Do a full system scan

One has to ask, where are you downloading said files from? If its something like Limewire or bit torrent, then it likely is infected. Microsoft Security Essentials is a good free alternative to your current Anti-Virus software. It might be worth a try?

I would say it depends on what you download and what bit torrent site you download from. ;)

I would suggest uninstalling AVG to start with then install either avast free or Microsoft Security Essentials. Whichever one you choose do a full system scan before going any further. As mentioned earlier also install the free version of Malwarebytes' and run a full scan with that.

Once you know your system is clean you can then try to download the files you have had a problem with. If they still flag as infected they almost cerainly are and you will need to locate a different source for them.

Remove AVG it gives to many false positives and has a lower detection level.Install AVAST 7 or MSE,I prefer AVAST 7 over MSE.

I don't believe this is true because everything I've tried to download recently has told me it has a virus and is deleted.
I think it's something to do with my firewall or AV software (AVG free).

Most of latest virus definition now not only block or delete suspected files though it's only false positive, but also any downloaded files containing pirated/cracked files. MSE also now doing that action.
Aside from it's infected or false positive, if it is proven as trusted files coming from proven trusted sites, then you can temporarily disable the AV and return it back after including the files into exception list to the AV.
Make sure you are only connected to that single site (be aware while your AV disabled).

You can try if you feel OK with it, otherwise don't :)

Kevin.
