Adobe just released a critical Flash Player security update. Good news: it includes a new automatic updater for Windows. Bad news: Adobe’s download page pushes a misleading “system optimizer” designed to scare users into paying for unneeded repairs.

I've come across worse stuff than that. You can just close that page. I know my system doesn't have errors and I wouldn't trust anything that puts stupid adds like that on a big corporation's web site. I've seen that iolo thing and you can follow the advice from sevenforums: Don't use a registry cleaner! Windows 7 can manage itself. I honestly didn't see anything scary about that ad.

Also: look at speedtest.net. They have a bunch of those registry cleaner ads.

That has become so commonplace that I don't know that it is right to single out Adobe for it. At least it is on their download page, where it is at least obvious, rather than being in the downloader/installer like some do, where it is easier to overlook a box checked by default to install something that you don't want.

Yea, I agree. I hate those installer ads. I have seen those iolo ads on Adobe's page for months now and now they are getting spotlighted about it. There's nothing to be spotlighted!

On a more serious note, I can't wait until HTML5 (or 6, or 7...) finally puts Flash in the dust bin.

I would totality single out Adobe for being "bad" in this case...

Does Adobe really need money THAT badly?!?

I can understand new sites or other sites with free content. But Adobe is a huge successful company that makes tons of money on real products. It does not need to do anything like this in any way and it completely cheapens their image to that of a freebie trash site.

I would like to feel that there are at least SOME companies on the net I can reasonably trust to be upstanding, this removes some of that trust. It's disappointing. Companies like Adobe with paying customers do NOT need to have disappointed users!

(Yes I know flash is free but it's a tool to sell their flash creation tools, never mind their insanely successful Photoshop and Illustrator tools)

If "idiots" didn't use Flash, for everything on their websites, we wouldn't have to have it.
Our PCs would be more secure when surfing the Internet too.

Correct but $$ talks (but it will take time). Would a company pay to create Flash based content or use open source/lower cost options, especially after all major browsers are able to use HTML5?

Add Google / YouTube support for HTML5 into the mix and place your bets.

I know what my employer will use...

I don't use Webroot, but I once tried it for a year. Their bogs are okay, as I do subscribe to them.
