Do You Think That Windows Vista is as bad as a lot of people claimed?

I have been using Windows vista in Virtual PC 2007 for a little bit and it doesn't seem that bad. It has been using less ram than Windows 7, and it has been pretty smooth. It is a little slow, but I blame that on it being in a virtual machine. So, do you think that Windows Vista was so bad?

I never had any problems using Vista. Ran perfectly fine for me. A lot of people who sang XP's praises during the whole Vista thing forget how much of a ropey launch XP had when that was first released. It was a lot worse off than Vista.

Yea. XP has the "slowdown effect". Sometimes, it wil get so slow that I will pop in my XP disc and will reformat the hard drive. I don't really want to fool around withg XP sometimes.

i was put off installing vista for a long time due to all the negative criticism.

i eventually tried vista x64 and ran it with no problems for a couple of months until i came across windows 7 RC, which i did admittedly prefer, but that is far from saying that vista was bad - it just wasn't as good.

Yea, I agree. Windows 7 is better in a lot of ways, but there are some things that I like about Vista that aren't as good in Windows 7. I like Windows 7 a lot, but I think Vista is good too.

I never had a single problem with Vista.
Most of what I heard was the driver issues, and people not liking the different look and navigation through the system.
Still have it on my boys PC, and it's run flawless since the day I got it. I liked it more than XP, and in reality, I still like it better than 7, even though they aren't that far apart.

yes it was it kept giving me black screens even after all updates. I did a fresh install 3 times and went extremely slow even though it had all its drivers updated with 3gbs of ram and nvdia card , so I suggested to my uncle to change it to windows 7 and I installed it for him with all the drivers and everything. The problem was fixed no more headaches and it ran really smoothly.Basically my opinion is that windows 7 is what vista should have been in the first place. It's not bad but with all those bugs and troubles I went through trying to fix it, made me hate it.

I found it a heavy program that functioned well enough but once used I didn't see any need to switch my XP machines for Vista. Windows 7 having heard it was light like XP changed my thinking and once used there was no going back. I see Windows 8 like Vista and nothing I'm going to upgrade to.

When I first bought Vista I opted for an upgrade DVD and had various problems after installing it: updates took forever and a day, Windows Explorer froze intermittently and the system seemed slow and sluggish.

I then discovered I could use the upgrade disc to carry out a clean install and after that it seemed fine.

By and large I got on pretty well with it and still have it an old laptop that has a couple of older programs on it. So far, Vista hasn't let me down, so I'd say it was rubbishy at first, but a lot better after the clean install.

I uninstalled it and bought my own copy. Clean install with all drivers. Rock solid from then on. Much faster at loading programmes (FSx in particular) than Win7, on same machine using the same HDD.

In some ways I regret upgrading to Win7.

I had absolutely no problems with Vista. And I had used it since day 1 (Febr.1, 2007) and on several laptops and desktops. I think the badmouthing came mostely from people that had never used it. And that was proven by MS with their Mojave Project.

That's what I did. I bought the upgrade version and did a clean install with it right off the bat. Flawless running to this day.
There's just something with "upgrading" over the top of the previous OS that never worked well for me. Last time I did that was with 95 over 3.1.

I got on fine with Vista and never had any problems. It came pre-installed on my machine but it wasn't one of the big well known brands so wasn't full of bloatware.

If Windows 7 hadn't appeared I'd still be using it, I'm still using the same machine though.

Vista got a really bad rap when it was first released due to drives and such not being ready by third parties. It didn't run all that great, and wasn't very streamlined and performance wasn't as good as expected. By the time that SP1 came out, it smoothed out ok and has been reasonably good.

Honestly, we have lots of Vista machines at work and they have wierd problems from time to time...especially with shutting down or hanging on installing updates. Usually when these machines have significant issues, I format and install Windows 7 and things are much better.

Way back at the start of Vista days new high end computers {Vista Ultimate} were purchased.
Loved it immediately!
Could not understand what all the negative commotion was about.

Came Win 7, yet another new computer with Ultimate.
Ever since...
The favourite OS used most frequently was Vista, until a HD died!
RIP Vista.
IMHO it was the best OS thus far.

I personally beta tested Vista since Beta 2 and I loved it and was excited for release. When it came out it was just as I expected--good. I'm not sure why people hated it. I personally found it more user friendly with more features. I guess it's because of the missing drivers for old devices. I had a relatively up-to-date system back then.

I have been testing Vista to see if it will work on my friend's pc with 1.4 gigs of ram and a Celeron D cpu. I turned the settings WAY down in virtualbox and made it about the equivalent of that pc and it runs well. It doesn't run great, but it will probably be WAY better than the horribly slow copy of Windows XP they have on that pc.

I had no dramas with Vista either. All of my devices worked out of the box and was overall a very stable OS for me.

Although my sisters laptop at the time had a whopping 512mb of RAM and it did run like a dog. Performance was alleviated somewhat using Ready boost until I upgraded her RAM and from then on it was nice and smooth. The difference was night and day really.

However I did find Vista needed to be 'tweaked' a bit on fresh installs to improve performance. Once SP1 and SP2 were released it was a extremely good OS.

The only non-fond memories I have was the amount of disk thrashing it did, particularly on a cold boot.

Most of the hate was was based on '5 min/never actually used it' users. Vista bashing using stale and regurgitated arguments was very much in vogue.


Admittedly though, once 7 came along I haven't looked back.

Exactly. Ditto to the drivers comment too. As a gamer I knew I'd have trouble so I kept XP on my main machine while I installed Vista on another one just for work. Had zero problems - even worked fine with the laser printer we had. Even now I still have one Vista x32 laptop (mostly because couldn't be arsed to purchase another Win7 license... I'm not made of money lol).

I can buy that some people had issues out of the box but even then I'd eyeball the mobo and assorted hardware drivers first. But all the bellyaching about the OS? Bah. Mostly people who don't have a clue what they're talking about.

Vista was a decent OS, it was individuals trying to run it on outdated hardware, and driver issues with high end hardware that gave it such a bad rep. I remember people bringing me systems that barely met the minimum requirements, only to complain that it ran so slow it was almost unusable.

Those who bought OEM machines with Vista generally didn't have any issues with it. This is only because OEMs could build to suit the greater demand on resources, and compatible hardware.

On the opposite side of the coin you have hardware enthusiasts and gamers, who waited for months on drivers that were terrible at best. Forget trying to run high end hardware, or game on a Vista box for its first two years of life.
