I have searched my computer & googled & just got to some very silly places.
These graphic popups giving me miniature versions of what my minimized windows look like, are driving me to distraction. I am assuming there is a way to disable this "facility?" Oh gawd I hope so.
Thanks to the saviour who will deliver me from this popup hell!
Seriously, thanks for being here!

Thanks for the instructions. However I have disabled Aero Peek & they are still popping up. I can no longer see my desktop when I point my cursor at the end of the tray, but I am still getting those huge thumbnails. I restarted too. Any other suggestions?

Yes. I edited my first post. I do apologize.

Here's a screenie - didn't know what size to put it so apologies in advance if needed. You shoud be able to see that Aero Peek is disabled but I'm still getting the thumbnai popups.
It will have to be an attachment, will that work?

I think he wants to disable the mini window when you hover over the taskbar icon not the Aero Peek when you hover over the mini window. Maybe one of the related tutorials to delay the time before there displayed or change them to a list. Check these,
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/75804-taskbar-list-thumbnail-previews-mode-change.html - List mode.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/40425-taskbar-thumbnail-previews-change-delay-time.html - Change delay.
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52265-taskbar-thumbnail-previews-enable-disable.html - Option 4, kind of disable them (long delay).

The last one comes with a con but you can add "LastActiveClick" to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" which allows you to switch betweens all windows in a group by just left clicking the group.

EDIT: "LastActiveClick" is a DWORD and the Value should be 1

EDIT 2: You don't need the "LastActiveClick" I forgot you can still click the group to bring the previews up to switch windows.

Thanks, I've run out of time tonight, I'll try tomorrow.

Interestingly, first thing I see in your link is
NOTE: If Aero is not enabled, then taskbar thumbnail previews will not display even when enabled.

Also just looking down at the basic requirements, I'm going to get stuck on the last 2. (below) I will try to muddle thru the top ones. This is crazy complex!!

The Desktop Window Manager Session Manager and Themes Services need to be set as Started and Automatic.
Refresh or update your WEI score. You will need an WEI score minimum of 2.0 in both Graphics & Gaming graphics in order for Aero to be activated

Edit - this reply is for Shawn. Duzzy you weren't there when I wrote. And now I'm even more confused.
The popups that show in my screenshot. I don't want them to happen. That's the problem I present here. I'm sorry if I'm unclear. I don't know what other words to use.

I think your best option would be to try Option 4 from my last link, which is the same as Shawn's link and then they only pop up when you click the icon or hover for like 1min 40sec or you could set it to 300000 for 5 minute or whatever you want.

For 5 min edit the reg file - Replace dword:000186a0 with dword:000493e0

You could also use Option 2 from my Second link to manually set the value to what you want but I don't think you'll hover for more than 5 mins.
(1000 = 1 sec, eg. 60000 = 1 min)

If you like then you can then add the "LastActiveClick" registry entry which I believe will stop the previews altogether but this presents a problem. Say you had 5 documents open in Word then to switch between them you would have to click X amount of times to switch to the one you want to use or you could use ALT+TAB or WinKey+TAB (3D Flip).
Thanks, I've run out of time tonight, I'll try tomorrow.

Interestingly, first thing I see in your link is
NOTE: If Aero is not enabled, then taskbar thumbnail previews will not display even when enabled.
This means if they are enabled in anyway they will not display if you are using a classic theme or unchecked "Use visual styles on windows and buttons" under the performance options > Visual Effects or the two it mentions or have disabled Aero in any other way.

Also just looking down at the basic requirements, I'm going to get stuck on the last 2. (below) I will try to muddle thru the top ones. This is crazy complex!!

If you are using a Aero theme, which the that fact you get these thumbnail previews tells me you are, then you should have nothing to worry about the requirements unless your having performance issues just doing basic tasks as Areo uses more RAM and resources.

Yep, using step 2 in OPTION FOUR of the tutorial below should do this for you as long as you do not hover over the taskbar icon longer than 10 minutes.

Quick idea,
Try changing your theme to Windows 7 Basic. This should disable aero without having to fiddle around with the registry.

Edit - just read through the tutorial again and this is mentioned in it. Appologies for mentioning it again as it obviously doesnt work.

Just to let you know, I thought this would be an easy fix to disable that function but even tho it's irritating I'll have to live with it cos I've found the instructions given here, too complex & diverse to want to go into. But thanks for your time.

You're welcome. If you change your mind, then just let us know. :)

If you like, using OPTION ONE in the tutorial below would be the easiest way to disable the taskbar thumbnail previews. :)

That's ok.

I could simplify it though. Just download the reg file under step 2, Option 4 from http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/52265-taskbar-thumbnail-previews-enable-disable.html and run it. If you find it's not what you want then download the reg file from step 1, Option 4 and run that to reverse the changes.

And remember to Log off and log on or restart the computer to apply the changes.

Thats simple enough to try I think.
