AMD HD5850 and now HD6970(NEW)
Intel i5
Windows 7 x64 Home
4gb mem
Pc is 2 and a half year old now, the HD6970 i recieved today.
When using MSI afterburner idle temp is 55c (NEW), 49(OLD).

I'm getting bsod with error message in the lines of "could not restart display driver etc" both cards. Sometimes the screen freezes up and the bsod doesn't arrive only a remark bubble by the clock about restarting display driver.
Have used different drivers with the old one, and reinstalled windows during that time as well.
I am planning on buying an upgrade pack with mobo, mem and cpu. But i was wondering if the problem might lie with the psu? And how do i check that?

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps

I've been playing games for hours without anything happening, except once when a video was playing in game then i got the bsod. It seems like it happens when i watch videos either such as in the game, or streaming online. It doesn't happen every time, but when it does I'm watching a video.

I did the furmark stress test, not sure what is meant with gpu temprature maxing out, if it's reaching the max of the card, or when it levels out in that test. Because it got to 70-73 quick and stayed there for 15 minutes before i ended it.
And nothing is OCed

I'll do the mem test, but was wondering if it's safe to leave it unattended while it runs.
And going to format and do a clean install.

EDIT: I didn't think having two screens put as active, but using only one would affect the temp as much as it did. But i turned off multiple displays and the temp is idle on 43 now... But doesn't like scrolling fast with the mouse. Jumps 10C.

Wondering if with online streaming and scrolling causing problems if it's got something to do with HW acceleration.

Still video related though slightly different than BCC116

The VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR bug check has a value of 0x00000119. This indicates that the video scheduler has detected a fatal violation.

Yeah i know, but seeing as i'm only getting bsod when i play video i was wondering if something else was amiss rather then HW. I seemed to be able to force a bsod yesterday, by playing a video on youtube while scrolling up and down. Everything froze up and the gpu fan grew louder before bsod.

Anyways, i've done a clean install now and flashed the bios. If it happens again it got to be HW i suppose, but i doubt it's the cards.

Related to atikmdag.sys ATI Radeon Kernel Mode Driver. I would re-install newest driver available.

Yeah i did that, still get the "driver didn't respond" message.
It happened when entering certain sites certain times where core clock and mem clock jump to peak. It looked like a digital wave signal in afterburner.
I am at least getting a new motherboard, processor, ram as well as a ssd tomorrow, if it's still there i'll shoot myself =/

Tried to use the drivers and such that came with the card without luck. I wasn't able to enter overdrive in ccc in order to set the idle clock higher, because some have reported them to be very low. But in the earlier versions of ccc i did. CC = 250 while MC= 150. I put both at 370, don't know if thats too low,but it didn't work.

I wanted to give it a wait for about two weeks, but it looks like everything is working somewhat.
No more bsod and TDR, i don't know if it's the new beta 12.5 amd ccc or if it's the hardware. I suppose it was most likely the HW.
But it has been behaving as if i were going to get a bsod/tdr quite a few times, but instead i get "doesn't respond".
Seems like the new update to opera fixed that.

Other then that, I7 2600 doesn't seem to handle streaming videos very well when HW accelleration is off.
Dvd roms are running extreemly slow, most of the times.
Currently missing bootmgr.

But that's unrelated.

Ok...
I thought i was finally free from the bsods, but i gues not. They just sneaked by when i was away from the computer. I got about 4 or 5 today and in total 10 (Scratch that, 5-6 today, 11 in total) in the last ten days. The biggest problem i noticed until today was the frequent not responding messages from mostly opera. Though, after the last bsod, all the other minidumps dissapeard. No... Wait, second last.
I feel like i'm getting errors all over the place, bitdefender stops working, windows updater cant install stuff, access violation at 00412B4F, can't complete sfc/scannow...

The remaining hardware from the old setup is my HDD, which is used for storage now, dvd rom, "graphic card" and psu. The rest is new.

Ok about 11 bsods today... (Nope 12)

I wanted to upgrade the firmware for my ssd, and had to use my hdd to do so, installed windows on it and got a bsod. The firmware got upgraded after a while. But then i was unable to boot the ssd, Bootmgr missing. Did a restore, and repair without it helping. Tried to reinstall windows 7 to the ssd, but got bsods during the installation. I had formated the hdd by then... And got bsods trying to install winows on that one as well. I eventually got around to getting W7 installed on the ssd, but since it's a upgrade disc i need to do a upgrade installation so the reg code will be accepted. But i keep getting errors trying...
I'll try to remove some ram.
