BSOD after about 30 hours of use, believe it is catalyst 12.2 related

In Device Manager, double-click on the Device, select Driver tab, then Update Driver, Browse, then Let Me Pick. All of the drivers you've had installed since reinstall should be archived in the list, select another to try.

Otherwise import the driver file from Device Support Downloads webpage.

i almost DONT want to try and break my machine by updating the drivers to 2.2 if that is what yo uare suggesting, 2.2 caused problems, 12.1 didnt, simple as that, i posted the fix above that i used, if it is infact a fix, i wont know for sure until the 12.3 drivers come out and i feel ready to update comfortably.

also yo u repeated what i said in my process of what to do, just in fewer words, i just gave the location of the file i used, im not sure what the purpose of your post was yet entirely

The purpose of my post was to let you know where all of the drivers are archived, as it makes it easier to try different ones.

im sorry if it came accross that way, you did not explain where the archives where, nor does it appear you had read that ih ad already posted on the matter. my in tention was not to say i was not appreciative for the efforts but to say i simply misunderstood them, as they where not clear beyond what i had already said. im sorry again and hope you understand my point of view also. i am making my best efforts to understand yours.


To anyone else that has this issue, please address it to the community and not to me at this point, as it appears as of now i have solved my problem, there are numerous fixes and cuases to this problem though so if you find another method OTHER than what i posted, please feel free to share

Well. I finally fixed my atikmpag.dll BSOD's. I moved my 7950 to the other x16 slot. Either it was jostled a bit loose during shipping or the first slot is bad. Not a problem since then. No plans to crossfire so it matters little to me if it's the first slot.

I had tried nearly every software solution I could think of. Sometimes it's just hardware.

glad that fixed it, but i believe i posted a fix for it, if i didnt, here it is... worked like a charm...

the 12.2 drivers had problems for some people... simple as that so for me i rolled back to my last known stable driver (12.1)

to roll back PROPERLY!!! follow>

1. uninstall vga drivers
2. uninstall ccc in programs and apps
3. restart
4. run driver cleaner on ALL ati threads
5. delete c:\amd, c:\programfiles\ati, and programfiles(x86)\ati (it is iportant you do this!!!)
6. restart
7. have windows automatically update you graphics vga drivers
8. run the ati driver installer, BUT, cancel the install when it asks you for custom or express install
9. go back and right click on you vga controller and then UPDATE MANUALLY!!!, type in location c:\amd\support\**-*_vista_win7_**_dd_ccc\packages\drivers\display\****_INF, and update
10. restart... good as new

if i have forgotten anything, i will post... same goes for if you have any questions on my method if you chose to try this

But I've been having this problem myself, I'd just like to ask you guys if the above cure suggested by Thornton worked? I've just tried it on my system and hoping it'll work but being that it only happens after so many days I've got to wait.

no one on this forum can answer cuz i dont think they can re sim the problem. in the end, what i am doing is wiping it at its absolute root, and manually installing the drivers from the device manager. the instructions can be done withour purchasing driver cleaner, although i recomend it for security. its not that hard, just time consuming, if you wanna give it a try, without driver wiper, then you could tell us if it works without driver cleaner.

That's what I don't understand. The problem stems from "atikmdag.sys". Technically you haven't killed it, when you let windows install it's own driver it auto-acquired the relevant files (including atikmdag.sys) from the driver store online.

I'm assuming the problem for you was somehow related to the Catalyst Control Center?

Being that I'm on such an old video card (HD5750) I have normal access to install the 12.1 driver without your work around.

I have the same problem, the only difference is the time between the BSOD's is getting larger. Originally it would happen every 12 or so hours, then it moved to every 2 days, and now it's at around 3-4 days. I've ran extensive tests using furmark and vram tester (for 12 hours each) to test the video card and neither of those have brought any negative results, so I think it's safe to say my problem must be software related.

Here's a nice table of solutions I've tried which haven't worked:

- Swapping the monitors connectors on the video card incase that port for the second monitor was dying
- Playing some heavy video games in hopes that I can force the BSOD to happen again with no luck
- I've ran Furmark for 12 hours on my GPU without a single problem

- Testing the VRAM twice for 12 hours at a time with no errors found
- Updating my BIOS
- Using different drivers (12.2 - 12.4)
- I've ran Prime 95 for 12 hours without a single problem
- Cleaning out my PC and reseating everything

realize i am ROLLING BACK THE DRIVERS, i had this problem start, EMEDIATLY after upgrading to 12.2, i did this to roll it back.

origonally, without this process, just rolling it back wasnt working, it was still hapening, so i deleated all the amd files, ONLY INSTALLED 12.1, manually installed from device manager, restarted, good as new

Yes I understand that. Though strangely the trigger for me wasn't the 12.2 driver, for me this started since I moved to 12.4 driver to cure a problem I had with my second monitor randomly breaking on the 12.2's.

i see, well anyways, i didnt review your steps that carfully, you whent into program files, and prgram files x86 and deleted all the amd stuff right?

I did exactly as you said. I even disabled my network connection to be 100% sure.

I'm curious you rely on eyefinity with your 3 monitors... But your method means you don't have the Catalyst Control Center... How is it that you can still use eyefinity?

no i do, i only did this to fix the drivers, i guess i forgot to post that afterwards i do a full install again to get CCC, i do this AFTER i manually install the drivers though, NOT before, this is important. and to be honest i dont use full eyefinity, just run 3 side by side monitors, eyefinity runs 20%gpu on idle at times, sucks if your playing MoH or BF3 or cod or any other games with good graphics, things from crytech or unreal engine generally screw me over also. so i just run 3 side by side, and games i want to play on eyefinity, i just exit into windowed mode, and expand it close to the edges of my screen

after i have manually installed the 12.1inf, i go back and use the 12.1 installer to get ccc, however, when windows automatically updated your graphics drivers in one of the middle steps, it should have detected hardware and found ccc, just no drivers, this will allow you to runn full rez, and even tamper with colors, but quality is lower, and DX is not installed, nor can you play most games without running the 12.1 installer afterwards

sure, go ahead, although, if you wanna do some clean up work on it and add that last step of running the installer again, and just making things make a little more sence. im bad at typing instructions, ask me to speak them out loud to you ill do fine, but type them... na ah
