Another runin with 0x80070570

I upgraded last night from a C2D machine to an ivy bridge i5 (MSI z77a-g45, i5-3570k, 4X4GB Patriot PC3 12800 kit). Previously, I was running off a OCZ Solid 3 SSD, with a second OCZ Solid 3 as a cache/swap/temp drive.

New hardware is all in and appears to be running fine, however I can't clean install windows 7 on the SSDs.

AHCI SATA is enabled and MBR created, but every time I go to install it either returns an error during the extraction step (error code 0x80070570, or error code 0xc0000005) or it just blue screens shortly after. Same thing happens with both SSDs.

Most entries suggest that the first error code is symptomatic of bad memory. I one by one tried with each DIMM. No go.

I was able to install Windows onto a HDD with no problems (with all 16GB installed), so it seems to be related to the SSDs (though with my Core2 system the same drives worked).

Any ideas what's going on? Thanks!

Unplug all but 2gb RAM to try install. You can replace RAM afterwards. Then test your RAM - Test with Memtest86+ for 5-6 passes.

Where did you get Win7? Did you burn the DVD yourself? Try writing the official ISO to flash stick to boot and install: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Reset BIOS to defaults, set SATA controller to AHCI to try install, then IDE mode. Unplug all other HD's and peripherals.

If there is an EFI boot disk in BIOS Boot Order, remove it. Set SSD first to boot in BIOS setup, then use one-time BIOS Boot Menu key given on first screen to boot DVD or flash stick.

Fill in your System Specs in bottom left corner of post.

Well, they're 4GB DIMMs, but I've tried each one individually.

I'm not sure I understand how it could be a memory error when it installs fine onto a HDD. Seems to be directly associated with SSD.

I'll try that. It's a disk I burned a couple years ago from my OEM.

I've tried it both ways (AHCI, IDE). Only other peripherals are video and network. I'll unplug the network card, but need the video (monitor is DVI).

Not any more; that machine is gone. Before I got rid of it, I created a W7 disk from the install. I have that product key. It's what I used to install with the previous system and last night with the HDD.

Was this departed installation Factory OEM or retail OEM? Either cannot migrate beyond the original mobo they were installed upon. Only Full or Upgrade retail versions can migrate.

It's possible I downloaded it from digital river. Honestly I don't remember. It is a legitimate copy though, and has worked on my previous home-brew system (on SSD) as well as this one (not on SSD).

I suspect Retail OEM (from Dell). Product key is on a piece of paper I have with the install disk...

Did you pay retail for the disk as it might be a Dell branded Upgrade version which can also migrate like other Windows retail media? Did the key come from the COA sticker affixed to machine, or was it provided by Dell as would indicate a retail software purchase?

Have you installed it on other mobos successfully? Did it require a phone call to activate?

You can call or chat with Dell Support to find out if it can migrate or you can try installing it to see if it will activate - especially if it has migrated successfully before.

I didn't pay anything beyond what came with the Dell system.

Yes. A Core2 system and this Ivy Bridge system, just not on the solid state drive.
I called to activate with the Core2 system. I haven't activated on the Ivy Bridge system because it's not yet installed how I want it (i.e. on one of the SSDs as opposed to HDDs).

Another forum is suggesting that it may be my new board isn't providing proper AHCI drivers during the install.

I do get that far. I can choose the drive, format the drive, and use the command prompt to clean/enable MBR, etc.

I generally get past the "copying installation files step" and it hangs on the "extracting installation files" step. Once it got further and bluescreened (with non-descript errors).

Will do. I appreciate all your advice Greg. Items of attack after work are (in no particular order):
1) Flash the drive firmware
2) Make sure I have the latest BIOS
3) Install AHCI drivers manually

So I am up and running, but sadly can not explain why or how it came to be.

I installed new firmware. No go.
I installed the latest BIOS. No go.
I then ran clonezilla and copied windows from my HDD. Forgot to copy the boot partition so of course it didn't boot.
I booted to the Windows disk to run repair. It found a boot problem but failed to fix it.
For poops and grins, I decided to try one last time. I run the installer, and it goes through.

It's likely running Startup Repair a second time is what did it, since to write the System boot files it requires running Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times. Sometimes two times works.

The partition must have also been marked Active since it will normally only write the boot files to the Active partition.

So you still want to clean reinstall? If so you can run the installer from Win7 desktop, to overwrite C.

You're right, there is a windows.old folder so I think it did repair.

I'm happy enough with it up and running. I may re-install at a later date. Thanks again!

Well, the system is fairly unstable. It blue screens often, generally during program installation.

Memcheck86 returned tons of errors.

Is "good RAM" perfect (ie should there be zero errors) or are some to be expected? I can easily return the modules if they're problematic.

You want to carefully follow the steps in RAM - Test with Memtest86+ to isolate the stick(s) which are bad and also test the slots which can themselves be at fault.
