Laptop will not sleep, hibernate or shutdown

For the past few days Windows refuses to shutdown. Everytime I select the sleep, hibernate or shutdown options it will reboot/reawaken straight away. I have tested the RAM which had no problems, I reinstalled Windows completely which didn't help & I checked power settings in BIOS to disable auto-restart. Laptop works fine when on, just refuses to power down - only holding the power button will get it to stop doing anything! Very annoying, can anyone help? Cheers.

I hope this isn't a virus or some malware. I would force a hard shut down and then after waiting 20-30 seconds then boot into safe mode with networking. Update and run your Anti-virus and Malwarebytes several times and with luck it will pick something up and clean it out of your system.

After re-reading: When you re-installed W7 did you do a clean install where you formatted your drive again?

Malware did not pick up anything. Yes a complete reinstall with HDD reformatting.

Here are a few things to try;

Use the Task Manager to manually try and identify the probable cause or causes for this. Manually stop and quit the suspect program, and then shut down to see if the issue has been resolved. You may have to repeat the procedure with several running processes.

If you aren't able to find out what is preventing you from shutting down by doing that;
Upon reboot, tap f8, from the Menu, select: Enable Boot Logging and hit enter.
After windows loads completely, search for ntbtlog.txt file in C:\Windows folder. Look for any signs of problems loading device drivers, the log will actually say, "Did not load driver". If you find problems, go into Device Manager and disable the device or uninstall the program. Reboot. If the problem does not occur then you know it was that device or program causing problems.

Taken it to computer repair place but they said they'd never seen anything like this which doesn't fill me with much confidence :/

Did you try what I suggested? Also, please do this, even though you aren't getting Blue Screens it will provide us with important information.

Thanks guys but I took it to a PC repair shop and they couldn't identify the problem, other than it is a hardware fault - apparently would cost £400 to fix (replacing entire mainboard)!!!

Luckily, it's covered on my dad's home insurance and it's being collected for repairs/replacement tomorrow.

I had tried the above solutions and more before taking it there.

Yes that insurance has saved my life! (figuratively )

I'm kinda cheekily hoping for the chance to get a brand new laptop but obviously would be happy either way! I'd predict they'd go for the cheapest option but if it really does need entire new innards like the 1st repair shop said (which sounds like quite a big job, sourcing the replacement parts, getting the mainboard out and putting a new one in - when it's a laptop so all soldered in etc...) then maybe they might just think it's easier to get a new one!

One of the things I've learned via some laptop technicians don't set your laptop up to sleep as with many mainboards can fail to wake up or have other issues. Get in the habit of shutting down fully and booting normally any time you save using sleep will be wasted when the mobo burns up.

Never had a problem with laptops sleeping (at least, not since I stopped using 3rd party "optimization" tools). My girlfriend leaves hers on for weeks at a time without a shut down or reboot, and it runs flawlessly. Obviously, some laptops are better than others and there are going to be some lemons. Of course, it is not always just lemons that have issues. Sometimes the laptop just is not thoroughly tested and users essentially beta test them until the companies update drivers/software/utilities to resolve such problems.
