Clicking on specific folders causes explorer to crash

Running Win7 RC 64

Whenever I click on folders that contain mkv/h264 files, explorer crashes. But if I view the folders through the open feature of say notepad, then I can click and delete the folders no problem.

What can I do?

Most of the cases it used to be the Context Menu. You could try this

Download ShellExView

The rule is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

Do you have to reboot after each change? If not, I went through that process with shellexview but explorer keeps on crashing.

Most cases you might not need to reboot. Also you could try this try to Disable the Thumbnail View and also install the lastest codec for MKV / h26. Maybe K-lite Codec. Also try to change the default Program that opens with MKV.

I was having the same problem as the OP... I just downloaded the first MKV file I've had since installing W7 and opening the folder it's in crashes Explorer. It recovers nicely, but the only I could fix it was to disable the thumbnail view or to rename the file to a different extension from a DOS window first.

I ran the shellexview and disabled all the non MS extensions but that didn't help. I even tried disabling some of the MS ones that deal with videos... but no luck.

I had the K-Lite codec pack v5.4.4, so I uninstalled it and upgraded to v6.04. This broke the association with the MKV file and its icon reverted to the generic unknown (it had been an icon I didn't recognize, even after I forced the default to be Media Player Classic). But the crashing stopped!

I re-set the association to MPC and it works fine.

So, the rambling lesson I guess is that the problem was either caused by something in the old codec pack, or by whatever program was previously associated with MKV files.

I know this thread is a little bit old, but in case anyone else ends up here like I did, trying to solve this problem, I think I can offer a little more guidance. Using the ShellExView program linked above, in my case anyway, the apparent culprit turned out to be "DivX Property Handler". I tried disabling the DivX Thumbnail generator first, but it didn't help. Disabling "DivX Property Handler" definitely solved the problem, though. Your case may be different, I don't know.

I just wanted to Confirm the cause (and second Blaineklyle's post) that DivX Propertly Handler was causing Explorer to crash in Windows 7 when you click on a file. Also seemed to cause my system performance to degrade too.

Seriously, I really like this forum so much. By disable the "DivX Property Handler" definitely solved the problem. Thank Man.

Hi guys, thank you for the solution, i have had this problem for about a month and i thought that my files were getting corrupt but thanks to ShellExView and Blaineklyle's informative post.

The culprit turned out to be DivX Thumbnail Provider.

Thanks guys for the answer to a problem that's been bugging me for months. I installed the shell software, disabled the 2 Divx items and voila! Problem solved. Took me all of 2 minutes..

well a lot of years later this Item/topic is still alive.

For several weeks now I encountered the same problem (I think). When I click on a file (and some times when I click the movie in it) Explorer.exe stops working.

I did thet sfc /scannow but no solution, I disabled every non MS extension name (I didn't find any reference to DivX) but STILL my explorer.exe crashes.

The things I disabled were
AZContextMenu Class --> Context Menu
AZContextMenu Class --> Drag & Drop Handler
AZContextMenu Class --> Drop Handler
DisplayCplExt Class --> System
SimpleShlExt --> Context Menu
MTShellClass --> Context Menu

The AZ ones ar from Alzip
Display and Simple are From AMD Display
And MTShell is from tageditor.

The Tag aditor and ALzip are on my PC and not updated for more then a year and I never had any problems with them.

Any ideas for solutions?

BTW I recently started to have BSOD's as well about once a month, but I can't relate them to anything similar to this problem (or another)

Thats Fine,

But the BSOD aren't that often and the explore fail about every time I want to do something. So I rather not wait around to have a BSOD before finding a solution to my problem.

The solution may already be hiding in the existing BSOD .dmp files - upload them as specified in the prevois link I posted, and we'll have a look.
