Solved PC in sleep mode will not respond to mouse or keyboard

I recently re-installed Win7 Prox X64 on my PC.
MB is Gigabyte GA-M875GMT-UD2h.
Now when I put PC into sleep mode it does not respond to the mouse or keyboard.
I have to use the power button which causes what looks like a boot up sequence but the says "Resuming Windows"
Nothing in the BIOS has been changed. The S3 setting for Mouse and Keyboard are enabled.

Not a train smash, but it is annoying.

Have you tried the 'Esc' key?

USB keyboard and mouse?
Are they enabled in the BIOS, 'USB Keyboard Support' and 'USB Mouse Support'?

Power On By Mouse
Allows the system to be turned on by a PS/2 mouse wake-up event.
Note: To use this function, you need an ATX power supply providing at least 1A on the +5VSB lead.
Disabled Disables this function. (Default)
Double Click Double click on left button on the PS/2 mouse to turn on the system.

Power On By Keyboard
Allows the system to be turned on by a PS/2 keyboard wake-up event.
Note: you need an ATX power supply providing at least 1A on the +5VSB lead.
Disabled Disables this function. (Default)
Password Set a password with 1~5 characters to turn on the system.
Any KEY Press any key on the keyboard to turn on the system.
Keyboard 98 Press POWER button on the Windows 98 keyboard to turn on the system.

Yes, it is GA-MA785GMT-UD2H.
Please excuse my typo.

It all worked just fine prior to the reinstall, which was the only change.
Nothing in the BIOS was changed. It seems like signal from the keyboard and/or mouse is not getting through.
Yet the DELETE key gets me into the BIOS.
Have attached link to a shot of the relevant BIOS screen.

Do you use Hybrid Sleep? (in Power Options)
It sounds like your PC is not "Waking from Sleep", but it is "Resuming from Hibernate".

To test this

If you use Hybrid sleep, turn it off.
Put the computer to sleep.
Press the power button to see if it can wake up.

If it can't wake up, it should re-boot and display the "Windows did not shut down properly" message...

There is no Hybrid Sleep option available because I have Hibernate disabled.
There is no hiberfil.sys file on my system.
Yet it certainly seems that the system is hibernating since I assume that the "Resuming Windows" message only appears on return from hibernation.

I wonder if some update has altered how the command
C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe Powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep
operates

That is weird.

To see your available sleep states from an elevated command prompt enter
powercfg -a

I fiddled around, turned hibernate on and off a few times using POWERCFG

AND LO AND BEHOLD PROBLEM SOLVED!!

AIN'T WINDOWS WONDERFUL!!!
