Solved Windows 7 Pro 64 bit repair install fails

After having tried for a long time to fix a number of problems (see Not Running Genuine Windows Error 0x8004fe21 for the details), I've tried to do a repair install.
This fails however during the "compatibility check" with the following error message:
"The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.
An error prevented a required compliance check from completing. Cancel the installation and try upgrading again."

Does anyone understand what this error message means and how to solve the problem?

I do not want to do a clean install. I want to do a repair install, without having to reinstall all apps and their configs.

I've yet to meet someone that can interpret the CBS log file. Did sfc report, in the command window, that it could not repair any integrity violations?

If so, could you run it an additional 2 times, rebooting between each sfc /scannow, and then report back?

For those who've already responded please note the following.

1) as far as I can tell, Gilles has a perfectly valid copy of Win7.
2) He has had some major corruption problems - some of which were addressed and corrected in his original thread in the MS WGA forums that he pointed to
3) (Karl - please don't pre-judge!)
4) The poor guy has been fighting this for a month now - with what little assistance I have been able to offer - and eventually I directed him to a repair install. This came up with a very general erorr message, which is why I drected him to these forums (they are more likely, I suspect, to produce a viable solution than the normal MS Answers forums)

Give the guy a break, please, and try answering the questions, rather than pandering to your prejudices.

(as far as the CBS.log file is concerned the only person I know who can reliably read them is Niemiro - who has been on the sick-list for a few months now)

Are you using the latest official ISO installer w/SP1 for the Repair Install? If not download it using steps 1 and 2 from Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Next establish a Clean Boot as shown in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7. If this fails to resolve the problem, then disable your AV in both listed locations.

Run SFC -SCANNOW Command as suggested until it finds no integrity violations, and then run a full Disk Check if necessary from Elevated Command Prompt .

Have you had a bootloader such as GRUB on the HD? This may require wiping the HD to Clean the boot sector with Diskpart Clean Command before a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

You should also not be afraid of a Clean Reinstall as it solves all problems and if you follow the steps in the tutorial will yield a perfect install which few users have. You can then save a backup image so you never have to reinstall again.

The process also familarizes you with your computer much more and puts an end to dragging out frustration. We are also here to help you at every step, and are the recognized leaders in this field.

Have rebooted and run sfc /scannow an additional 2 times.
The result still is the following:
C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Boot up into Safe Mode.


WIN | type CMD.EXE | ENTER

type, followed by hitting ENTER:
cd /d %windir%\logs\cbs
now type, followed by hitting ENTER

findstr /c:"[SR]" CBS.log > %userprofile%\desktop\sfcdetails.txt

This will place a file named "sfcdetails.txt" on your desktop.

Please upload that file.
