Win7 Backup/Torrent Server with 512MB?

Someone is giving me their older computer, with pretty unimpressive specs. The only thing I'm concerned about is the 512MB of memory. On the other hand, I'm only planning on using the computer to act as a torrent and backup "server."

Will I have any issues running Win7? How about 64-bit, which allegedly requires 2GB of memory minimum? If I can't run it, it's not a big deal, but I was hoping to have all my systems running Win7.

Thanks!

If it's got only 512MB RAM it's very likely that the CPU inside does not support 64-bit, so you won't be able to run the 64-bit edition anyway. But since you want a server, why not look into Linux? That's what Linux does best.

Why would you go through the expense of licensing a copy of Windows 7 for this machine if you intend to use it as a torrent server and backup server. I'd highly suggest getting a copy of Ubuntu Linux or something and installing that on a box with these types of specs. It will be able to do torrents and allow storage space for backups, no problem.

Yes issues are ram, slow cpu speed, and maybe graphics. win 7 can run 32 bit in 512Mb but its going to be slowwwww. Server by itself needs that much mem, and torrents need fast I/O. Probably not your best choice

I appreciate the responses; thanks very much. Linux scares me, but I'll look further into it. :)

Well Ubuntu comes with a bittorrent client, so the torrent part is taken care of. As for backups, i always do them on DVDs so i have no idea really, but there must be a relatively easy way. :)

Its not as hard as you would think. Just need to learn how it works like any OS
