Use format other than .ico for Icon?

I have some nice icons Id like to use for some programs but you are limited to .ico files. The files I have are .png and Ive tried a few conversion programs but so far none of them keep the icon looking its best.

Is there any way to use formats other than .ico for an icon?

Thanks guys. I checked out what you posted, and I guess the issue I have is that when the icons are smaller, like when you use them on the Task Bar, the quality is diminished. ill have to play around with them more but I think unless its an official icon, its not going to look as crisp.
