bought new laptop few days ago its hp dv6 and went to factory reset via the recovery partition, it stuffed up few times during instlallation and got few blue screens and was stuck on formatting so i formatted laptop to win xp to burn myself a win7 installer into disc so i did and tried installing via disc but same thing happened it still didnt work, after the format completes i get an error straight after the hp logo saying

Windows boot manager

File: \boot\BCD
Status: 0xc000000f
info: an error occured while attempting to read boot configuration data.

and something like insert os disc and click repair

so i was able to fix this via cmd prompt
so then after i fixed that error now im gettin another error saying

file: \window\system32\config is missing or corrupt

the laptop doesnt go beyond the error im just stuck on viewing the error and iv even used my os repair disc and it didnt do help. im able to install xp without a problem but not win7 i know iv definitely got registry problems.

Maybe the hard disk went bad? Take it back to the store where you bought and ask for a replacement if under warranty.

DarkNation, Welcome to SF. As well as the suggestion above, when you get your replacement unit or hard drive please call HP and request the W7 disks. I like you have a new HP lappy and HP was kind enough to forward them on to me and it makes clean installing much easier.

Oh as well when these arrived I then took the next step and cloned the clean installed stock hard drive to a SSD and then put the stock drive into a external case. Faster boots, software loads, downloads and then write to the HDD or back as needed, massive improvement in performance, lower heat and longer battery life !

alright i bought it off ebay it has 1 year warranty, it was listed as new never been used but i have a feeling its not listed as brand new as they may have switched the HDD with a refurbished one thought it might be worth a try to look for a solution before i send the laptop off.

Come back and tell us how it all goes. Worst case order the disks from HP and go get a nice 128gb SSD which can be had for around $100.00 delivered and then maybe all you really need to RMA is your HDD and when it arrives place it in an enclosure and your off to the races.

The error your getting is likely due to a bad installer. Use the latest official ISO for your licensed version and the tool in Steps 1 and 2 in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Everything you need is in the blue link to get a perfect reinstall, a much superior install to HP's factory bloatware.

If the latest ISO burned using downloads tool fails, then wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command. You should then know if the HD is detected functioning or detected. If not try booting into HP diagnostics to test it, boot the HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, or ask for help under your warranty to diagnose and replace the HD.

I'm wondering however what kind of warranty and Ebay purchase provides. Please let us know as we may be able to help you better.

How did you burn the DVD? Burn another using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

Next try writing to flash stick as given in tutorial I linked, booting that.

If both fail then you should wipe the HD if you haven't already. Test the HD using maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan.

Check HP Support Downloads webpage for newer BIOS update. If none reset the BIOS to defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS . While in BIOS setup set SATA controller to AHCI to try install.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals.

If it still fails remove all but 2gb RAM to try install, making sure to touch the case while touching electronics, Swap RAM sticks, check slots for debris.

Waiting for response to the other steps I gave you. Did you reset the BIOS to defaults? What are results of the HD Diagnostics test?

If you can't regain the ability to boot a disk and the HD and RAM test good, then you can move the HD to another laptop to wipe it with Diskpart Clean Command, or try booting free Partition Wizard CD
which will boot itself to Wipe the HD. Then when you return the wiped HD to problem machine it should autostart also the installer to reinstall.

I would also pursue the warranty via the seller to see if you can send back the laptop or at least replace any bad parts.

iv posted the HDD out from the laptop back to the seller for an replacement.
plus iv wiped the disc several times, tried every solution i could just would not fix the problem.
anyways thanks for trying to help me out.
