Tech industry experts are predicting that demand for certain tech roles will dramatically decline over the next decade as organisations switch to cloud computing.

By 2020 the majority of organisations will rely on the cloud for more than half of their IT services, according to Gartner’s 2011 CIO Agenda Survey.
Revealed: The jobs that will be wiped out by cloud computing | TechRepublic

Hi there
PLEASE NOT GARTNER again -- anything that STUPID bunch of nothingness and hot air bags says has EVER been proved to be more than 50% accurate --about the same as you'd get by random guessing or even getting a Gorrilla to choose between two outcomes. (In fact the Gorilla might just come up with a better prediction).

Look at Off shoring -- this has now come full circle -- surprise here but some Indian companies are beginning to "Outsource" their stuff back to Europe !!!! and as for the whole Call center stuff -- well that's probably the most hated consumer experience ever and rapidly going into terminal decline as other means such as direct Internet "Chat" mechanisms take over.

Even if the Cloud DOES become huge --who on Earth does Gartner think will staff it.

Most companies these days have a significantly higher percentage of Contract I.T staff in comparison with the number of "Permies". All that will happen is that these contractors will be in "Office A" instead of "Office B". So what's new.

You'll always need local support too -- the whole hideous Call center stuff has shown that TIMELY remote assistance just doesn't work -- an individual might get angry waiting on a phone for 30 mins -- in business that's just NOT an acceptable solution.

Cheers
jimbo

I take that article with a grain of salt. It's a possibility, but no matter how hard you try to predict something, there's always a curve ball waiting to be thrown....

Hi there
wasn't having a go at you -- but Gartners is always quoted as "The Fount of All knowledge" in matters I.T rather like "Moody's" in the Financial Industry and we all know (to our cost for a lot of us) how totally spectacularly wrong they got things in 2008 --and they are STILL respected --- some people never learn.

Different situations cause the job market to vary -- many old jobs disappear --remember old "Comptometer Operators" (not Computer Operators -- different thing completely -these guys handled Mainframes back then) for example -- but new ones appear.

It might not be of much comfort for some people on hard times but when we say that the economy has declined by say 1 % compared with 2011 -- just think how much LARGER it STILL is than in say 2007 so it's not always bad news.

Cheers

This is the same type of person who said the iPad will replace all traditional computers. The author is clearly trying to stir up emotions in order to acquire internet attention towards his article.

Hi there
wasn't having a go at you --

I know, didn't take it that way. No probs. It's just as I said, people have been trying to predict the future of computing for a long time (as well as everything else), & there have been a few surprises along the way...

My philosophy...what's gonna happen is gonna happen...:D
