Most clear cmos settings are on the motherboard, which does involve opening the case.

   Note
This wil reset ALL Bios settings including the date and time

Here's what I want you to do. Unplug your computer. Then, hold down the power button that is on your computer for 10 seconds (while it is unplugged) This will drain all of the power out of your pc (except the CMOS) Then, open up your pc. Locate the silver, round battery on the motherboard. Then, remove the battery (you may need a pocket knife for this. Be very careful with the knife, so you don't damage anything) Now, while leaving your pc unplugged with the battery out, hold down the power button again for 10 seconds. Then, insert the battery where it was before (and be sure not to put the battery in upside down) and close up your pc. Then, plug in the power cord and wait 3-5 seconds. If your pc doesn't automatically power on, press the power button. Your pc will POST and then it will display a message on the screen, indicating that the CMOS has been reset.

The manual for your motherboard should tell you how to do it. The BIOS itself should have a "Reset to fail safe default" option. Another option is a reset jumper that is on the motherboard, usually close to the CMOS battery. If you use the jumper make sure the PC is off and the power supply is unplugged from the AC wall outlet. Failure to do so may result in damage to your motherboard. The jumper option is usually only needed if the PC will not POST and you can't get into the BIOS menu.

Probably should have asked this earlier, but why did you need to reset your BIOS to defaults? Formatting a disk erases its contents and makes it blank. That by itself will not return the PC to factory default setting. Are you wanting to remove Windows 8 and go back to the originally installed operating system?

Have you replaced the battery? Is the date/time correct in the BIOS? You will need to reset these settings as a minimum.

Ops, thought I was in the Windows 8 forum for some reason. I've heard that an incorrect date and time will cause Windows update to fail, so as advised above check it to see if its correct.

Could you give more information? Such as, can you get Internet access at all from the PC?

Clearing the CMOS without knowing how your BIOS was set up may not have been a good idea, if you don't know what the proper settings should be. That information has nothing to do with Windows. It isn't usually saved anywhere outside of the CMOS, so there may be no automatic way to recover it.

Now that you have your bios of the motherboard to default and the bios time set correctly boot again and get into Windows. Right click on the time in the lower right corner and go to adjust time and date. My understanding is; setting bios time does not set Windows time and setting Windows time does not set bios time. They are two separate things. Times must be correct or you will not be able to receive Windows Up dates.
