Regarding 64 bit Operating Systems

I recently posted the following on another site and didn't get and helpful responses, so I'll try here (note: it involves both Vista and 7).

---

I'm having trouble installing both Windows Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64. With Vista, I can boot and make it to the desktop, but shortly thereafter I have weird graphics glitches and the screen basically becomes unusable and I have to manually reboot (it does this on each subsequent restart, as well). Additionally, the audio from my Logitech S220 is all garbled and that's a problem as well.

With Windows 7, I can't get past the "Starting Windows" splash screen -- it just freezes there.

I've heard that I should remove a stick of RAM (I have 2x2GB sticks...I heard it needs to be 3 GB or less...don't quote me on this) on install and insert it after...here's my system:

- Dual boot Windows Vista SP2 / Windows 7 7600.16385 (both x86, obviously)
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e @ 2.6 GHz
- 4 GB DDR2 RAM @ 667 (I believe)
- NVIDIA 8600 GTS
- Ultra 500W PSU
- Hitachi 250 GB HDD / WD 640 GB HDD
- Acer Aspire M1100 desktop
- Acer F690GVM mobo w/ 10/10/2007 BIOS revision
- Acer X183H monitor

If anyone could help it'd be much appreciated. Please note I haven't tried removing a stick of RAM and installing yet; but if that's the only way let me know (I find that weird, but, hey, whatever works I guess).

Also, FWIW, Windows says I can run 64 bit (in the print scores section of the WEI).

Thanks!

Well, the 32 bit versions dual boot fine...I'll take a look at that guide, but I don't think that's exactly what I'm looking for. :)

I'm essentially wondering why I'm having on these problems on what is supposed to be a 64-bit capable system.

Welcome aboard the Se7enforums! jshimmy33

The 64bit editions of Vista were seeing problems during the installation with over 2gb of memory installed. The MS advice was to simply remove 2gb until Windows was on and running. As for the 64bit 7 I have 4gb of memory on and have repeatedly installed Windows several times without any 2+gb issues.

The problem you may be seeing there is not from having more then 2gb on but a faulty dimm. Or you may have seen a bad burn to disk once you downloaded the 64bit 7 there.

As for the problems with Vista besides a memory fault did you remember to install the board drivers? That or simply seeing a bad install of Windows will cause problems right away.

Make a run to ensure that you have the most current drivers from your vendors websites, and be certain that they are 64 bit drivers.

I've installed win7 64-bit on 4GB and 8GB machines without any trouble whatsoever. I've never had to remove RAM to install the OS.

the reason i guess is out dated drivers
and problem in dimm RAM

i have installed 64bit vista with 2GB RAM with no problems

i guess its more of problem in RAM than drivers!!!

During the installation of the 64bit Vista editions you would run into a 2gb barrier of some type which many into right away when Vista was first out. Later SP1 saw the 32bit Vista report 4gb when 4gb was installed while still not seeing all of that available.

By now some of this should already be addressed with Vista SP2 disks allowing for MS to address that problem. For 7 even for the 32bit you see Windows installed and have some 3.5+gb available out of a 4gb total there.

When you are seeing both Vista and 7 run right into problems then you have to looking at a few things like bad ram, bad burn to disk, bad blank media used...

Aside from the quoted clause, what does this problem have to do with the amount of RAM installed? The problem might be a faulty RAM stick, but the reported problem is not typically indicative of faulty RAM.

The OP seems to think his platform is not 64 bit capable because of his reported issue. The OS installed and booted. It is decidedly 64-bit capable.

I would bet a nickel that the audio driver is causing the set of problems, even the graphics anomoly.

Validate your drivers.

I'm currently running Vista 32 bit with 7 64 bit dual boot and they're configured perfectly! :D

Well I have the 32bit RC running on the VPC while in the 64bit RC. I previously was running the 32bit Vista Home Premium there until restoring an image onto the drive where the other 32bit RC is presently located.

When does a month go by when I'm not trying something else new? :D

Hello everyone, regarding drivers, my computer is (specifically) a Acer M1100-B1300A, and the only drivers I could find for it are here:

Acer Europe - Service & Support, Drivers & Utilities, Downloads, Desktop, Acer Aspire M1100/3100/5100

Is there any way of verifying these are 64-bit (I don't see an indication of either), or is there a better way of acquiring these drivers? Thanks again!

what happened antman? do you think i shouldn't have thanked him for the rep?
Your expression of gratitude is valid and appropriate. My "Hey" simply refers to the fact that this thread was full of nonsensical advice that did not address the OP's reported problem. I advised the OP to validate his drivers.

You did an excellent job of showing how and where to do so. +1 to you, -1 to the OP.

I may or may not owe someone a nickel.

Oh! Now i got what you said. Thanks. :D
