Yesterday I had a PC technician around to see why my PC was not booting-up properly and also to change my SSD to a larger SSD. As I am visually challenged I cannot do hardware upgrades etc, so I got a Techie guy in.

We used Zinstall HDD by-the-way and I would highly recommend this application for such a job plus, it is extremely fast.

Anyway, while he was diagnosing my boot-up issue he discovered I had a malfunctioning network card; while removing this, he noticed all the SATA settings were set to SATA 2.

When he reset these to SATA 3, the PC would not start-up! When he set them again to SATA 2 there was no problem and it worked fine?

Can anyone illuminate me on this please?

Thanks for any/all imput

Many people have had issues with the Marvell controller on that MB.
You may want to live with SATA 3g/s. Easiest path, no real difference except for benchmarks, and no chance of data loss.
But in case you're not satisfied with that, here's something to look at.

http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/...9128-controller-windows-7-ultimate-x64-4.html

[Solved] ASUS P6x58D-E, Win 7 (64) Marvell AT 91xx - Asus - Motherboards-Memory
A fellow name Jaquith seems to know what's up.

Bottom line is you need the right drivers.

Go to the ASUS website to get the proper drivers for your mother board.

Here> ASUS - Motherboards- ASUS P6X58D-E

Enter your OS version and select the newest by date driver listed.

Listed under SATA. Version 1.0.0.1034 / 2010.03.25 update

Use the Global download button.

There's some question about that driver supporting TRIM.
The consensus is that it doesn't.
If that matters to the OP, he might choose to stay with the Win 7 drivers.
OTOH. his SSD controller might have garbage collection that can replace TRIM.
There's a lot dispute about this.
Personally, I would just go with TRIM support and forget about the increased speed gained by the Marvell driver. His next MB can have it it all. But it's his call.

I have the same motherboard and through a lot of trial and error I use sata 2 for my ssd. Some benchmarks show sata 2 faster than sata 3. In actual use I can't tell the difference.

Marvell 9128 supports TRIM.

The older Marvell chips such as mine with the Marvell 9120 controller are questionable especially with older drivers.

Marvell 9128 supports TRIM.

Right, but the Marvell driver doesn't. Here's the best description I found.

Marvell 9128 - Revisited (briefly)
The response they got from Gigbayte was this: "Marvel SE9128 controller can support TRIM command only with Win7 built-in driver, however, Win7 built-in driver doesn’t support SATA hot plug. With Marvell’s own driver, it doesn’t support TRIM command, but it enables hot plug."

I don't swear by any of this. Lot's of confusion about it. But the above is closest to the "real" answer I've seen.

Thank you very much guys.

On another matter but related to this thread: With me been visually challenged, I had to get a technician into to fit my new SSD. The disk was purchased with a 2.5" to 3.5" converter but would not marry-up to the screw holes on the caddy. He managed to fix it with one holding screw and because of the light weight of the SSD said it seemed fine. Is then anyway of getting around this issue does anyone know?

Thanks for any/all help

I had the same problem with the Samsung. I left out the conversion tray you speak of because no screws would attach.
I layed it in the HD drawer. The cables hold it in place securely.

So one screw and the cables/wiring should do fine. There is no vibration to shake it about.
If they survive in a laptop they will survive in a PC. :D

My 2 cents. ;)
