hi guys, I have a PC running windows 7 and another running windows XP, I'd like to remote control the windows 7 PC from XP, is that possible? I tried with the default remote control program that comes with XP, but it doesn't seem to work, I get an error message, it shown in the following screen shot:
error message.JPG
if I try the other way around from my Windows 7 PC, I have no problem making a remote control connection to the XP PC. is this a known issue? I checked the network setting I don't think I have an issue there, but I think it could be a software compatability thing, what should I try do you recommend to try other 3rd party solutions? or is there a way to make this work if I tweak my settings? thanks!

Do you have to setting enabled in RDC to allow connections from computers running any version of remote desktop enabled?

Right click on My Computer, go to properties, in the upper left corner there is a link to enable remote connections. You have to go in there and enable remote desktop connections to this computer and also indicate which level of security you will require from remote desktop clients.

I'm pretty sure it's just turned off and once you turn it on, you will be all set.

thanks guys, yes you are right it was disabled. but when I tried to connect it was very slow and would not come up, but when I disabled all the effects it came but but very slow and not responsive, I think I have an issue with my wireless network that I need to figure out. I also had problems using utorrent webui, and slow performance while copying files. the windows 7 is connected vira wireless, and the XP machine is wired to my linksys WRT54GC. I wonder where do I start to trouble shoot wireless performance? I am trying to google for now, but if you know of any tools or resources for troubleshooting wireless performance issues would be helpfull.

EDIT: Performance issue sorted, it was not a wireless issue, the XP machine had the wrong driver installed, When I checked everest it was showing a different adaptor model, Once I put the correct driver it was sorted.. strange it was still working ok for a week with the wrong driver, well not very well but it was working most of the time...

Awesome, glad that you got it all sorted. I was about to say that RDP is usually very reliable for me and plenty fast.

by remote control do you mean viewing the other desktop and interacting with it? If yes there is an app called team viewer that lets you do just that.

Thanks ken but the remote control that comes with windows is now working perfectly for me, the issue was a networking issue on the XP machine, not sure why but the problem seems to come and go, the only way to fix it is to restart the XP machine. first I thought it was a driver issue, because when I changed the driver it seemed to fix the problem, but now the problem has appeared again last night. when this problem happens, all networking becomes very slow and if I try to access files on the other computer explorer sometimes crashes or freezes... the NIC in question is realtek 8139 or DLink 530TX , but windows XP identifies it as Dlink 538TX, the NIC seems to work under both the RT8139 or Dlink 388TX drivers, at first I thought it was wierrd, but after some research on the net I discovered that Realtek is the manufactorer of the Chip on the NIC, and the Dlink is the OEM. just like nvida makes chips for ASUS or other OEMs who make video cards, so you can either use the driver from Dlink or Realtek, but both seem to have the same issue... there is also no new or updated drivers to try so don't know what else to try..

ok just want to report that the network problem with the XP was just a faulty cable! why didn't I Think if that before.. I tried replacing the drivers, even enabled serives I previewsly disabled because I was worried it might have something to do with it, each time I had to disable and reenable the NIC, finally after I tried another cable there is no more issues now!
