Solved Killing in Regedit : Legacy key; MBAMPROTECT (NOT)

I want to completely remove M'bytes as thre seems to be problems arisen from having installed the full version over the free one

I have read an old thread on the matter of removing legacy keys from the registry, and have, at least I thought I had, followed the advice given. Clearly I must be missing something.

I have attached four grabs, that I hope may give some clue to my errors.

On my system I am sole user with admin privileges, and there is a separate administrator account too.

I hope you can help.

Just use a free uninstaller like Revo.
You may have to install the free Malwarebytes version again. Uninstall it in revo, click uninstall, and select Advanced uninstall. delete every extra key you come across.

Failing that, I'd use Ccleaner's registry cleaner to take out any extra keys it finds. :note: However, I wouldn't use it to clean out the whole registry, as often it will delete a key you use, such as MS Silverlight keys, and more. Only check Malwarebyte keys to delete.

I'm still at a loss. I have never had a problem using MAM free or the Pro I use now.
If I did want to remove it I would use REVO. I do quick scans most every day and long scans every week with no problems.

MBAM is an excellent program to have around. However if you are intent on uninstallation and you are hitting problems with removing the program via the control panel then try the removal tool. The tool for removing MBAM was created by its authors. You can grab a copy of the tool here

I agree with Sir George and Cookieman to use mbam_clean.exe to uninstall Malwarebytes.

Also, there is no need to uninstall/re-install when changing from the free version to the Pro version.

In the installed free version you can register the MBAM Pro Key and ID and that will unlock (enable) the Pro features.

I had used Revo in advanced mode. Ccleaner did not bring anything reacted in the registry.
Layback BearAlthough Pro had been installed some while back, I was getting warnings that database was more than seven days out of date despite the protection showing ON.

As M’bytes is uminstalled, I am guessing that to use the link the utility I will need to reinstall M’bytes Pro?

You do NOT need to reinstall M’bytes to use the mbam_clean.exe.

Regarding your issue with out of date warnings:
Did you setup/check that you have automatic updates scheduled ?
Do you logon with a Standard (not Admin) account when you get this warning ?

I use my sole account that has admin privileges. As to the schedule, the program having been uninstalled ( except for the legacy item in the registry) I cannot know, but normally I would have done.

I have just tried the cleaner and rebooted: the offender is still at large.

FWIW the cannot delete reason is "error while deleting key".

Edit: Have tried to install pro version from my retail CD and got MBAM_ERROR_LOAD_DATABASE (0,5)

Maybe Sysinternals' Autoruns or Process Explorer might offer relief if MBAM shows up in the scan.

Do you get this error trying to install the program, or did the program install and you get this error trying to update the virus definitions ?

If you are installing from a CD, it may have an old version of the program.
The current version is 1.61.
If you have MBAM installed look on the "About" tab for the version.

From Post #1, I'm not sure what you did, or what old SF thread you found for this.
Did you manually edit the registry?

Do you have a restore point and/or backup image from before you first tried to update to the Pro version?

I'm guessing you are asking about the Permissions you have in Post #1.

In a system i am looking at permissions are different than yours for LEGACY_MBAMPROTECTOR.

My LEGACY_MBAMPROTECTOR permissions:

EVERYONE has "Read"
OWNER RIGHTS has "Special Permissions" (only)
SYSTEM has "Full Control" and "Read"

I was using MAM free and then went to MAM Pro trial and liked. Mailed them money. They emailed me with the activation code for MAM Pro, (not a trial version). I downloaded it and installed the activation code. It installed right over the existing MAM with no problems.
Where did you get your CD/DVD for MAM Pro?

Pro is paid retail version 1.45 bought feb 2012 through Amazon UK from PC Supplies Ltd.

You messed your system when there was no need to, MBAM just requires the registration serial and it works for whatever version you have, no need to uninstall or change versions.

This is just about removing a registry key? The program, except for the registry item, is gone, yes? Any more problems because of it? If not, consider just leaving it alone. Could the problem have come from registry changes on your part?

What i think caused this issue is Ver 1.45 was installed on top of Ver 1.61
Questions i asked in Post #13 haven't been answered, and based on what is in the OP Post #1 it's not clear to me what was done to try and fix this.

DO NOT use Version 1.45

Download the latest MBAM Version (1.61) from
Where can I download the latest version of Malwarebytes? : Malwarebytes Support
You can use your Key and ID from your purchased Pro version to register the downloaded version.

Without clear answers to all questions asked it's difficult to give good advice.

What you can try:

If you have MBAM installed, uninstall it
Reboot
Run mbam_clean.exe
Reboot
Try installing the downloaded version (1.61) - Do not accept the Trial offer
If 1.61 installs OK, register your Key and ID
Make sure you can update the Virus definitions

If you do get any errors, specify exactly where you get the errors ( during uninstall, during install, running mbam_clean, updating DB, ... )
