I am not talking about updating to Service Pack 1.
I had a thread similar to this earlier in the week, but I started a new thread as I have more information.

(I had to replace my SSD, that's why I needed to install Windows again (I did NOT activate Windows with old SSD))

I don't know if this will be relevant, but I used an upgrade disc to install Windows 7.

First off, I tried using the new upgrade copy I had, which included Service Pack 1 on the disc. I got all my drivers and stuff installed, but then when I went to update, I noticed I was getting this damn problem.

Simply reinstalling fixed this problem before, but I have reinstalled many times and have not been able to get updates to work.

I then tried a Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit disc that I use for another PC, this disc didn't have Service Pack 1 on it. I used this older disc, but I used the product key from my new disc, this installed fine.

Without service pack one, I was able to install 100+ updates. After downloading and installing a heap of updates, it finally got to downloading and installing Service Pack 1.

After it installed Service Pack 1 and a few updates that seemed to go with it, I was unable to check for updates, I would get the following message:

--
Windows could not search for new updates

An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.

Error(s) found:
Code 800F081F Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
--

I uninstalled Service Pack 1 and was able to check for updates, again.

It found and installed some more updates, but then once again it go to where it wanted to download and install Service Pack 1, once again.

These are the updates it downloaded with Service Pack 1:

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2529073)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2545698)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2547666)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2603229)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB982018)
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)

Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Should I just get a full (OEM) version of Windows?

Hello,

Even though it is for Vista, you might want to check out the following:

Windows Update 800F081F

Try temporarily disabling User Account Control in the Control Panel, or try the other method in that article.

Hope I helped.

I've tried disabling UAC and firewall, but that doesn't help.

I'll just keep using the PC without updates. If I can't find a solution, I may just buy a full version of Windows...

Hi guys. I dunno what changed, but I was just sitting here testing GPU overclocks when I see a little balloon pop up telling me updates are ready to be installed on system shut down...

I spent all yesterday and half of today trying to fix this and it's just suddenly started working, for no apparent reason. *sigh*
Windows...

Anyway, thanks for trying to help, guys.

So - did the updates install?
Have you done a manual check for further updates, and installed them?

Good point. I just shut it down and it installed 1 update, I went to Windows update and it's not downloading ~75 updates.

Will try manual check when it's done.
