blue screen with GeForce 7900 GT

Hi,

I'm having a problem where if I double click on a video or a picture, my screen goes to a pixleated green screen, then when I hit ctrl-alt-del, it goes to a pixelated blue screen. When this happens, I hear the video card fan go to full speed and I have to restart to fix the problem. If I drag the picture or video into media player first, it works great.

I've seen these screens before when I had video driver issues with another compuer. I have the Nvidia driver 8.15.11.8172 installed now. When I tried to upgrade to the190.38 drivers, I got the green screen of failure on start up, and had to reboot in safe mode and roll back the drivers.

The video card is Nvidia GeForce 7900 Gt.

Can anyone offer me some tips or advice? It would be greatly appreciated

Close enough vid card? probably driver. How much ram?

do you think I should try to find an older driver? the newest one just gives the the green screen right away.

Probably if the old one worked than use it. I am using the GeForce 8600 GT.

how exactly did you install the drivers? you may want to try
1.booting in safe mode with networking
2.downloading newest driver from Nvidia site(still in safe mode)
3.uninstalling the current driver from device manager
4.use a driver cleaner to remove from registry
5.reboot in safe mode with networking
6. install new driver and go from there

I had problems with Nvidia drivers and this worked for me.

I just downloaded the installer to the desktop, double clicked and went from there, I will try safe mode -> uninstall -> restart ->safe mode install and see how it works,

I tried the method you suggested above, and it didn't work. I got the blue/green screen on start up right after installing the newest drivers 190.38. I had to go back in with safe mode and delete and erase the 190.38 drivers and start again, and let windows pick its own drivers for the vid card.

I guess I'll have to stick it out for now as it is. I don't know what version of media player I have, but its whatever came with the 7100 build.

same problem with Windows 7 using evga 7900 GT KO, Intel D975xbx motherboard, tried using windows 7 nvidia driver, then clearning off and installing nvidia driver. no luck
going back to XP

Hi, I posted on the general forums regarding what I think MAY be the same issue.

eVga 7900 GT here as well, every so often my gpu fan will kick on, then I'll get a screen with jumbled colors, it looks like a bunch of ladders slanted diagonally across the screen, the color will match whatever I am running in the background, it just happens whenever the GPU fan kicks on and goes away then about 3 seconds later the fan quiets down.

I took a SS during the glitch, but it just showed the screen normally, so it must be a hardware issue.

It seems to be a problem with the card and Vista/7. Not all 7900 series cards are effected but in the weeks I've been researching the issue it seems the 7900 series are the only ones that this glitch occurs with.

I've tried every driver as far back as 15x.xx-190, and no luck. Although the older drivers cause the issue to happen much less frequently, my best luck has been with the 156 drivers (I think its the 156 drivers, not entirely sure off the top of my head). The problem only occurs for a few seconds when a video is opened, however, anything that is heavily graphics dependent (Milkdrop 2.0 for example) will cause the problem for as long as it runs.

Rivatuner shows a spike in the core speeds across the board of about a 50-100mghz jump, once the speeds go back down, video returns to normal. The newer drivers cause this clock jump a lot more frequently under Vista and 7, but not XP.

My card is an EVGA, and the problem seems to be most common with that brand, though I can't say with any certainty that in researching the issue other cards might have the same issue.

Rolling back to older drivers makes it bearable, but I hate having a computer that isn't running at 100%. Win 7 is such a nice OS though that I will deal with it.

I tried posting on the EVGA forums, and contacted EVGA, but no response. This seems to be a fringe problem with the 7900 series that Nvidia in general has decided to ignore. It seems the best solution for the problem is to switch to ATI.

I dissagree, though it might seem like a driver issue. I have the same problem with my XFX geforce 7900GT.



Ok, I'll start writing: Geforce 7900 have a firmware problem, especialy with Windows Vista and Windows 7, but the issue is also present with Windows XP. I have spent a lot of time with XFX technical support and we have found out a way around this issue.

What you need to do:

1. Get the newest driver for your card from nVidia.com (It doesn't matter if it's a new or old driver because the issue is not related to the drivers).

2. Install RivaTuner. You can get it from: RivaTuner v2.24c download from Guru3D.com

3. Launch RivaTuner. Here is an image below:

4. On the image you can see ForceWare detected at the image at the back. On the right side there is a link to the front image.

5. The way around this anoying issue: Enable hardware overclocking. Increase the core and memory clock with 4-8MHz and save. This will not damage your card, nor increase the heat comming from it.
(I haven't tried underclocking my card but this might work as well.)

6. If this works your GeForce 7900 card will need Rivatuner running at all times. If you don't want that, you'll have to contact your card manufacturer for a firmware update file.


The manufacturer firmware update will permanently overclock your card so it is really not a fix, just the way around.



So that is that. I hope this works for you, because the issue described is the same as I had. I couldn't even change my windows background without a hard restart

Worked For Me

Hi Everyone,

Was having similar issues with a gainward 7950. My screen was going either blue or green with moving zig - zag across it vertically, as if a resolution had been set that the monitor could not support. It did this when i did anything which put load enough on the car for the fan to speed up, even opening photos.

I tried the fix above with riva, on windows 7, and it worked spot on with the latest driver from windows download. (190.62 i think) Even though riva said it wasnt supported.

Just a few MHZ up on each setting seems* to have cured the problem, it was happening constantly!

At the moment I have put the 7900gt on ice and bought an factory overclocked 896mb xfx geforce 260 card (so much better and powerfull than the gf7 series)

I would recommend you guys to do the same if you haven't done that already...
