It's a really strange optical illusion. I can't explain what I'm seeing can you?

It is quite a clever pic but only made possible by the eye being consistent with the profile rather than with the face. :huh:

It's a really strange optical illusion. I can't explain what I'm seeing can you?

I think you will find it is your binocular vision is trying to kick in on two different pics - caused by the different crossovers in the optic nerves from the retina in each hemisphere of the eyeball.

If you don't already know the right side of your brain basically controls the left hand side of your body because the nerve pathways cross over - but in the eye the nerves emanating from the two inner halves of the retina (if you can imagine the retina at the back of the eyeball as a half tennis ball - just for demonstration purposes) are the only nerves that actually cross over to the opposite side of the brain's visual cortex.
The nerves emanating from the outer two "half tennis balls" do not cross to the other side of the brain's visual cortex they travel to the same side as they situated on. Therefore you have binocular vision and hence this picture is sending images that are hard for your brain to "decypher" / "interpret"

This is easily demonstrated as I found out many years ago before I began my profession. Cover one eye and then get someone to throw a ball at you and try and hit the ball with a bat. Now in my instance I could not hit the ball on many occasions at all because I had temporarily lost my depth of vision (the distance of the ball from me) and visual proprioception (where the ball was in space to my position).

I don't know, but I don't think it's that complicated. It looks to me like someone took the actual hard copy of the photo of the guy looking straight forward, and cut what looks like a profile of his face with a scissors, on the right side of the pic (the left side, as it looks to us). Then they photographed it, and voila!

ICit2lol, I know what you mean about the 3D part of vision. We have around 6cm difference between both eyes. This makes each eye see a different picture, the brain takes these two pictures and calculates the third dimension, depth

Yeah I know but it is he difference in the images from those two inner half hemispheres for want of better description that gives us that "binocular" vision. In reality this is only a tiny part of the "illusion" for want of a better term again that we are seeing it is as down to what you see and I see and interpret much like some of those weirdo paintings that one sees (no pun) that you see the critics stand back and rave on about the aesthetics of.

Good examples would be Picasso and that awful Blue Poles our incredibly discernible politicians down here bought some years ago for an exorbitant amount of money that quite frankly I think a kindergarten child could do before play lunch

You see it is that we are like snowflakes none of us are the same ie fingerprints - or so they tell us and I have often wondered what my brain albeit a fairly small and simple one interprets the incoming light wavelength as blue might be red for another and so on.

I have often wondered what it would be lie to have the vision say birds especially those of the predatory kind and life forms such as the squid where the light detecting cone and rod cells in the retina actually face forward whereas human eyes they face backwards making out vision that much less powerful and acute as those creatures. I think I am right in stating that they also have more of those receptor cells that increase their visual ability over us.
My last bit of trivia is that that birds "see" moving objects in far greater detail when it comes to moving objects ie we see things moving at a rate of 25 frames per second whereas birds see them in a time frames of approx 60 per second. you can see the effect if you put your video recorder on slow motion and you will see it moves in "jerks" and those jerks are 25 seconds apart but played at full speed appear to be a constant movement. Now birds having that different time fame see moving things at a much faster rate of frames - 60 per second and probably explains why there are so many birds killed on the road for instance because this phenomenon causes the bird to see it moving slower than it actually is. Of course you must take into account that some species of birds might be just dim witted like me! :shock:
So next time you go on holidays and take a look at the panorama you'll know that you are panning across the Grand Canyon for example in 25 images per second and not the sweeping movement you think you are seeing
