Partitioning Problem In Win7 Home Basic (factory pre-installed)

The problem which I faced is the same as the one given below:

I bought a new HP laptop which came with 4 partitions all of which are Primary partitions. The c: drive came with a massive 445GB. But I do not want to use the same partition for all my needs so i was thinking of creating another two partitions. So i shrunk c: from the Disk Management leaving 320GB Unallocated space for usage. But when I tried to create a partition from I got the "changing to Dynamic disk" warning. Basically it's similar to the problem faced by the other person in the link posted above.

So I followed the post #8n by "Bare Foot Kid" and it went fine, the restarting and all till I tried creating a new volume. See the screenshots below:






BTW, I have no idea how it happened but Q: suddenly popped out of nowhere after the "max partitions error".

Just ignore Q which is a virtual drive configured by Microsoft Office suite for various purposes and will go away if you uninstall Office.

Use free Partition Wizard bootable CD to Create a New Logical Partition there , label and letter it.

Err...whats the difference between that and the free download one?

If you're referring to PW, the boot CD is free for what you want to do.

But for just creating a new Logical partition you can use the free installed version, since there is no risk requiring the boot CD as with Resizing or other operations.

Nothing was mentioned about having non-Genuine Windows. Is this the preinstalled OS which came with the HP? If so reinsert the Product Key from COA sticker at the link at Control Panel>Systems>Product Key.

If you want a leaner install without the HP bloatware you can run Minimal Factory Recovery from its partition. Make the Recovery Disks first. HP Recover Windows 7 Operating System Using HP Recovery - HP Customer Care (United States - English)


Or you can Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 with the installer provided, although you'll need to download another version to Unlock any version with eicfg removal tool then use the tool also provided to burn to DVD or write to flash stick an all-versions installer, select your licensed version during install.

Pre-installed Windows are Genuine, aren't they? or am I wrong?

Yes it is. Windows 7 Home Basic 64-bit. I haven't altered it. Pre-installed windows are OEM's, right?
Also the link which you posted " Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7" doesn't have Win7HB. Only higher versions.

Try contacting HP support.

You should be able to order the disc's to reinstall your W7 Basic.

If it is under warranty, I would tell them I bumped the machine while it was running and the HD crashed. They might send the disc for free.

Which will give you the option to install Home Basic.

Re: the first question. Are you saying Partition Wizard won't allow you to create a logical drive when you select the unallocated space. This should give you two give you 2 logical drives (partitions if you like) within the green outlined extended partition?

I think the second question has been answered. The HP is activated with an OEM:SLP key and internal process which is different to a clean install using the COA PID key. License types are described here. For you (non retail license) it will always be locked to your HP PC.
