Does Weatherbug carry viruses and trojans in scripts?

My Weatherbug quit working last week. Every time it tried to start, it
wouldn't, so I deleted it.

And my PC ( Win 7 ) was acting sluggish for awhile.

So today I ran a full scan with Avast!, and it found a few infected files,
then suggested running a boot scan on everything. It found 21 infected files
in all.

I've had Avast! for years and thought it prevented this kind of thing from
even happening, but at least it caught them today and my PC runs fast again
now.

But, could Weatherbug be the source of these infections? It keeps hanging up
on running all kinds of scripts. Are these infections that are being shut
down by Avast! ?

I take Weatherbug off of any install I come across it. It is endlessly problematic. Be sure to disable it in msconfig>Startup and >Services after hiding all MS Services first then I would uninstall with Revo in Advanced Mode: How To Use Revo Uninstaller To Completely Uninstall Programs

A stable weather forecast showing next three days and clickable to full report is the Win7 weather gadget which can be installed by right clicking empty area of desktop, choose Gadgets. It never causes a prob.

I would also change Avast to MSE due to recent changes that have caused most of us here to stop recommending it.

Problematic, as in viruses and trojans, via scripts and all that?

I mean, I like what it does, as far as alerts and a nice sized temperature icon in the tray, and the forecasts. But I can get forecasts via

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClic...OU&textField1=39.6952&textField2=-105.114&e=0

and the Weatherbug ads are obnoxious as hell.

MSE? Microsoft Security Essentials? never checked into it.

What's wrong with Avast! now?

I cannot say for sure that it contains viruses although if it does someone here will know. But I know that it is considered a problem app and first to uninstall for those of us specializing in installs. You only want stable apps starting with Windows, besides, which is why I suggested the built-in gadget. Others are freeloaders on your System, can spy on you which is how they make their most money, and cause problems.

Whew. OK. Well I'd already uninstalled it, and gone into regedit and cleaned that by hand, so it isn't showing up in the Revo Uninstaller now, but I did uncheck it in the Services Startup stuff.

And thanks!

I just checked and it wasn't in there, but Weatherbug was, and I deleted it. I must have preferred Weatherbug before and deleted the Win 7 one from there. So I went looking for it and got the following. Bummer.

Desktop gadgets

Because we want to focus on the exciting possibilities of the newest version of Windows, the Windows website no longer hosts the gadget gallery.
Gadgets installed from untrusted sources can harm your computer and can access your computer's files, show you objectionable content, or change their behavior at any time. If you are concerned about the safety of gadgets you’ve downloaded in the past, you can learn more about gadgets and steps you can take to protect your PC.
Some info for developers:
You can now use your HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript skills to build Metro style apps for Windows 8 Release Preview. To get started developing Metro style apps, go to Windows Dev Center.

Oh, forgot to mention - we recently got Comcast HSI and the wireless gateway firewall is set to minimum, but I guess the Win 7 firewall compensates for that, right?

As long as you set Gadgets to start with Windows, then it should hold the city you set for weather gadget.
