Icon #16 missing from imageres.dll even after replacing with new

Hi,

Something is preventing Icon #16, which is the default drive icon in Windows 7 from displaying in my imageres.dll.

The problems started after using various methods and software for recovering data from an external hard drive. My local hard drive icons went missing in My Computer

I took the following steps all of which have been futile:

1. rebuild icon cache
2. sfc /scannow
3. Replace the imageres.dll with the original Windows 7 one using Win7 orig. IconPack inst X64 by ~Mr-Ragnarok on deviantART


Basically even when I download an original imageres.dll from somewhere, when I see the icons in the database, Icon #16 is always missing. Also missing are many other icons such as 11, 12, 13 etc. as you can see in the screenshot.

Clearly something is immediately preventing these icons from showing even after I have replaced the file with a new one.

What could be the solution to my problem? I am using Microsoft Security Essentials and a scan does not show any Virus.

Welcome to the Seven Forums
They're not missing Microsoft did not put them there.
The drive icon is number 32 or 35 or 36 in the imageres.dllI don't remember for sure.
You said you already did 1. rebuild icon cache 2. sfc /scannow them would've been my first two choices also and I probably would've done your third choice to but if it didn't work you made need to do a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

Thanks a ton for the reply. I finally gave up trying to solve the problem organically and changed the icons manually through regedit as outlined in your link.

It looks like the OP is using "IconViewer".
It creates/installs a tab in the Properties window.

I installed it on my Pro X64 system but I don't see any Icons tab in properties for imageres.dll. I'll try rebooting but I suspect it doesn't work with X64.

That's weird.
I've got W7 Ultimate 64 bit and it worked for me (a few months ago).

There are separate installers for 32 bit and 64 bit.

I re-imaged my system a few months ago and I haven't reinstalled it though.
Maybe some MS update has blocked the functionality.

Update
I just installed it in a W7 Ultimate 64 bit VM.
It works for me.
I tried it on IconViewer3.02-Setup-x64.exe and imageres.dll.

Yup, that was the problem. I thought I had downloaded the X64 version but nope, got the X86 some how. Works now, thanks.
