Does Windows 8 succeed as a true tablet operating system?

Among desktop users, Windows 8's user interface has been met with a lukewarm reception, inspiring a recurring refrain: "Why have they put a tablet interface on my desktop system?" That Windows 8 is actually suitable for and effective on touch-driven tablets has been almost taken for granted.
A successful entry into the tablet market demands a strong touch interface. The competition from the iPad is stiff, and the iPad's iOS has five years of user interface refinement under its belt. Has Microsoft really gotten it right with Windows 8 and touch?

C'mon guys

-- I know this is W7 Forum but have you guys actually TRIED W8. There is a horrible metro interface you can get round but the O/S isn't as bad as you appear to make out --and security for one beats W7 hands down

-- read on how the memory heap is handled in W8 -- the memory heap stuff in W7 and previous releases was everybody's keys to the kingdom -- any course on Hacking 101 will point out that original massive defect in Windows security --but it's been fixed now. (What they would do was force a memory heap overflow into a buffer --then from there any half way even amateur hacker could do all sorts of nasty stuff).

Finally in W8 Ms has closed this defect.

I used Windows 8... then removed Windows 8. I don't like Metro and the desktop was ok, until they decided to remove Aero. Android and iOS are way better tablet operating systems than Windows 8. I don't think the price of the Microsoft Surface is worth what you get. especially since there are tablets like the Google Nexus 7 that are $200 and have a bigger app selection and more customizaton.

Considering I have had less than one damaging infection per decade in my over 40 years of programming/using computers, I want to have a more valuable reason than "a lot more checks" to switch to Windows 8. Vista had a lot more checks than Windows XP. A lot of good that did. They were so annoying that most people turned them off. Nagging simply does not work!

The major vulnerability to hacking your system is the human that is between the monitor and the keyboard/mouse/touch screen. No amount of increased checking will fix that one. Follow the long published simple rules of safe computing and your troubles will be few and far between. Keep a current backup and you will be able to recover from the few that do happen.

The bottom line is there is no lasting protection from sloth, ignorance, and stupidity.

I don't like anything about Windows 8 so far. From what I've seen and tested, it's just Win7 plus the iPhone menu minus an usable interface, but no significant improvements or changes. Essentially, it will be running the very same kernel from Vista (the Windows 6.x family) with minor and very annoying visual modifications. So far, I have no reason to go for it.

Does anyone know of a significant change on it? (besides the metro-crap of course)
Or even a minor change?

Even in a tablet, that realm is really dominated by Android and Mac, I doubt Windows can go well there.

The success of a Windows 8 tablet will depend on the price of a Windows 8 tablet. I have seen rumors that the entry price will start at $999 and go up to $1500. Compare that to the Google Android tablet with an entry price of $199 and up to $249. If that holds true, I know what I will be buying. Anything over $300 will be a hard sell.
