Solved CTRL+backspace started minimizing windows instead of deleting words

Quite a strange problem. Out of nowhere, CTRL+backspace has started minimizing windows instead of backspacing the last word in a text box. This is very annoying, since I'm used to using this shortcut to fix mistakes or wiping small chunks of text. Even while writing this, I've minimized the browser window a few times, I use this shortcut that much!

I'm savvy with computers, so feel free to use advanced terminology with me.

Thanks!

EDIT: Problem was caused by "GameCompanion", a tool for making games run in borderless windows. Adds itself to your Windows startup. To solve, open msconfig and untick GameCompanion in the Startup tab.

More of a workaround, but I'll use it if there's no native way to solve it.

How strange. I've also noticed another shortcut giving a weird result. Pressing CTRL+ALT makes the word "DEFAULT" display in big letters on my main monitor. Here's a print screen.

Note that I haven't installed any new software that could have caused this problem.

Thanks a lot for the offer, but I don't think it would really help. I've already had a good look around at what could be causing it, and nothing at all. AutoHotKey won't help either, since it cannot change a keyboard shortcut, it can at most add one on top. I was just hoping there would be someone who would see this thread and immediately recognize the problem :P

Do you have a spare keyboard around you can try out to see if it has the same problem? Has anything happened to the keyboard, say something spilling on it for example?

It doesn't hurt for someone to have a second look

do you know the make and model of your keyboard?

I'll be blunt with you. I've got sensitive data on this computer, and even just opening those ports is a serious security risk.

Just tried this. Didn't help, it seems to be a software issue. I reinstalled the keyboard drivers as well. No dice.

Okay fair enough.

What is the make and model of the keyboard?

For completeness, it's a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard.

But regarding the main topic, the problem seems to have gone away on its own. I haven't uninstalled, installed, or modified ANYTHING. After restarting yet again, the problem was still there, and just now I was writing a document and used the keyboard shortcut, just to see it work properly! The DEFAULT thing when pressing CTRL+ALT has also vanished... damn it Windows! Why must you toy with users like this?

Thanks for all the help, though. Windows truly is unpredictable.

Okay it seems you are not getting much of a response atm.

Would you be happy if I looked at the problem via teamviewer?

PM me if interested

Cheers

You may have the best of intentions, but it is extremely ill advised for anyone to allow any unknown person or entity to have remote access to a computer. The only knowledge I have about you is a post in a newsgroup, so, you may be some startup hacker looking for easy access to a computer while learning the ropes. On the other hand, you may be a top computer expert in the field of security, but I would not suggest anyone find out "which one" by allowing you remote access to their computer; additionally, I seriously doubt a security expert would even suggest allowing remote access to a stranger.

Just my .02 cents.

Damn, now it's back again. I'll try to isolate the problem somehow, then report back with the results.

EDIT: Found it surprisingly quickly now that I know when it started and stopped. After checking msconfig, I know know It's GameCompanion for Fallout: New Vegas. Apparently it added itself to the Windows startup list, and since it runs in the background, it's unnoticeable. I have no idea why a tiny program made to allow games to run in a borderless window would add such idiotic shortcuts.

Hello Jigglywiggly,

I see that your problem is already solved, but for the next time when you have a problem and come to SevenForums, please create a new thread instead of responding to an old, dead, thread which is already marked as solved.

Good luck,

A bit of a late reply but I found this topic while searching the same problem and, sure enough, it's GameCompanion. Perhaps it's an offering of a newer version, but that program has the option of viewing and setting the hotkeys. I've gone through and wiped them all since I don't need them and all my problems are resolved.

This is a bit more of a direct solution since some people might want to keep it running in the background for its intended purpose.
