Microsoft previews Hotmail successor, Outlook.com

Back in June, there were leaks about an alleged new Microsoft mail client -- "Newmail" -- something LiveSide.net described as a Metro-style Hotmail."

Today, Microsoft took the wraps off a preview version of that new client, which it is formally christening "Outlook.com." (The screen shot above is an example of what the new Outlook.com interface looks like.)

Microsoft is billing Outlook.com as a new free mail service that pulls features from Hotmail and Exchange. It is designed for personal/consumer use; Microsoft continues to position Outlook as its business e-mail client. Outlook.com is integrated with Windows and Office, and can pull in Twitter, Facebook, Gmail and LinkedIn contacts. The new mail client has the Metro look and feel. And it is providing users with more granular control over which ads they see and where they see them.

Hiyya Brink yeah mate just loaded it and it is quick but just one small fault and that is you can't see what you are replying to when you hit New to reply - just a darn great A3 sized message sheet - unless I am doing some thing wrong.

I can see you can add your old hotmail account to a new folder but I am not game to fully go Outlook until I find a way of seeing what I am replying to.

Just wondering if there is any support sites for answers as the intro to Outlook has not much info on it. Oh and one more thing I cannot find a way of attaching it to my taskbar like WLM :sarc:

You can click and drag it to your taskbar just like hotmail. (the icon on your open in-box).

Well it does and doesn't it pins to IE but not a separate icon but never mind just measn opening IE

Working good for me, like the new look much better than Hotmail.

Only problem so far is it doesn't work in Opera.

Yeah Dave but I still just don't like the fact you cannot see what you are answering to - I have my hotmail in WLM as an account as I like to keep mail and net windows separate.
If the new mail had the two distinct panels then yeah it's clean and quick - mind you the ads I think a little tacky and for what MS make I reckon it's just greed.

If hotmail goes down the tubes then I am going back to my old ISP account and use it from WLM.

John, on the first sentence, not sure what you mean. I haven't changed any settings and I can see the post I'm replying to.

Dave - when I click on new the new message takes up all the monitor screen and blots out what incoming message is so ok with short answers but fairly long mails like I get from my brother I have to rely on memory (not good) or using reply which means you are sending back the original message and that seems a waste of their download limits holds they have one.

My current WLM looks like in the pics.

Working good for me, like the new look much better than Hotmail. ...

It doesn't look very much different than Hotmail to me. I don't understand why it's even being hailed as new. All they did was add some ugly Metro style icons to Hotmail.

Yeah t-4-2 mate just look at my last post you'll see what I mean.
To use reply means sending all that info back to the sender and it is one thing that gets right up my nose is when people do that. So if I send a fairly large mail to a friend then I get back what I have already sent and it is so annoying.

As I said not well thought out or planned by someone up there at Microsoft - you could just put up with the ads but this is a real piece of bad planning and by people I suspect are highly qualified at writing software.

I'm sticking to WLM until they get it sorted if they ever do :sarc:

Seems like a bit of a shambles to me I am just trying out something with replies.

Whether it will work remains to be seen.

With all these new metro style programs, are Microsoft trying to push everyone towards Windows 8, to stop another Vista style disaster?

Microsoft seem to be trying to push the Cloud movement to users, with encouragement of Cloud in the new Outlook; Cloud has such a slow upload speed with files in comparison to using the standard attachments option :/

I like the new outlook.com, it is growing on me. I am simple in that the best part is - after you delete a message, it goes back to list all your other messages instead of automatically opening another message (now I'm wondering if this was some kind of setting in hotmail).

I don't need all the fancy looks of hotmail. I like simplicity, even if it is a tad basic in appearance. I might even upgrade to windows 8 with that deal they are sporting because I imagine it will be faster than 7 on computers.

Although the new Office 2013 hasn't given me enough reason to go out and make such an expensive purchase (I own 2010 already, and think I'll stick with it).

The trial version of 2013 on my other computer has come in handy when using skydrive and live mesh to sync with my first computer. I am impressed with Microsoft, but it seems apple remains always one step ahead.
