For a couple of years now, I've been saying "If you think MS is having a hard time killing off Windows XP, wait until they have to kill off Windows 7."

MS is working on both problems by offering a low-cost upgrade to 8, that will work on either XP or 7. The upgrade is to the "Pro" version, which does little more for home users, but a lot more for office users. That should help get XP out of the office.

So the question is: Will MS offer Windows 9 as a low-cost upgrade? First, they have to consider the fact that Apple upgrades are low-cost, and Android upgrades are free. Then they have to consider the expense of protecting their legacy systems; by offering a cheap upgrade, MS can desert their older OSes without alienating a lot of customers.

On the other hand, Vista, 7, and 8 will all run on each other's computers. But XP computers are generally older machines that ought to stay with XP. Eventually, MS has to come out with an OS that requires more powerful computers than what we currently have. Then an upgrade will be a bad idea, and MS can simply add the price of the new OS to the price of a new computer.

Maybe, Microsoft are creating a backup for the foreseeable failure with release of Windows 8 OS (might be wrong though), but with the version number being 9, will that be the last OS with a number, and then switch to code names like Google and Apple?

I'm pretty sure Windows 9 will be even move different.

My best guess is that it will support Metro apps fine, but the core will be rejiggered enough that you require a sort of "7 Mode" in order to run most desktop apps.

On the bright side, there may be a new native development kit for desktop mode, completely rebuilt for a new secure core.

Finally! With Windows 8 completed, the rumor mil has returned to Windows 9. One tech site has reported that it is currently code-named "Windows Blue." It also appears that MS has made a final decision on the official name: it will be called "Windows 9."

And for the record, when you start seeing offers to sell you leaked versions of Windows 9: Various programs and sub-routines for Win 9 have already been developed. Since there is no operating system for them, they are installed and tested on Win 8. These are called "builds." Yes, there are several builds of Windows 9 already in existence at MS. No, you can't buy one, and the websites that are selling them are lying to you.

I remember getting so frustrated by the BSODs and lock ups, where the only way to turn off my PC was to unplug it that I re-installed Windows 98 and wasted the money I spent on the upgrade cd.

Some folks hate Windows 8 so much that they are holding on for Windows 9. But one blogger points out that it won't work. Touchscreen devices are here to stay, no matter how many people hate them. By forcing PC users to use an OS that is designed for touchscreens (but works fine with a keyboard and mouse) MS plans to make more money.

I disagree with the blogger's statement that Windows 8 is a bigger step than Windows 3 was, but it is a big step. And MS survived the protests that came with Windows 3, as users were forced to use an OS that gave them a choice between DOS and Windows. Eventually, DOS was forced out, and MS did fine.

Windows 9 dropping the touchscreen interface would be like Windows 95 gong back to DOS. It won't happen.

I'm going to make another prediction.


I predict that Win 9 WILL have mouse capability, but it will be the last Windows OS to do so. Touchscreens are the wave of the future, and the mouse will be going the way of the floppy drive.

I'll switch to (choke, gasp) Apple before I let myself be locked into touch screens only! Touch screens just don't give the fine control that a mouse will. Having to constantly reach up to a screen is would be very tiring and, in my case, painful becaue of my adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulders). Touch screens are great for tablets but not for desktop applications.

On the eve of Windows 8, Windows 7 has finally, officially, this time for real, passed Windows XP as the world's most popular operating system. After an initial lunge by 7, most growth came from XP computers wearing out and people had to buy 7. Fortunately, most of them are happy with 7.

And then, along comes the surprising news that Google Chrome has almost caught up with Firefox as the world's second most popular browser. So how will this affect Windows 9?

It's safe to say that Windows 9 will be born into a world in which Win 7 is the most popular operating system, with Win 8 fighting with Apple for control of the mobile market. It will be a world in which touchscreen monitors are easily available. 9 will HAVE to be more desktop and laptop friendly; creating an office version, with a tiled interface devoted to office work, will be a big step forward.

Now that Internet Explorer is better than Firefox (It is, if you're using Windows 8), MS will have to concentrate on making a browser so far superior to its competitors that 7 and 8 users will be willing to upgrade in order to get it.

I predict: Windows 9 will have a new version of Internet Explorer, that can only work on Win 9. MS will have put so much work into it that 9 users will have the best web experiences of anyone.

They are like you know what. Everybody has got one.

But what is going to drive the Redmond people, will be the sales numbers. So morons with money will have a great effect on future issues of OS software.

Well so far im lovin' my 7 Ultimate and have no need for a Windows 8 or 9 or a Touch Display coz i just love the traditional Keyboard and Mouse and even the smoothest and most sensitive are no match when it comes to a KB and Mice my two cents.
