Solved new motherboard - no power up.

Hi all,

i was passed a packard bell x2414 the other day as it failed to power up. The fans would spin but nothing else.

ive tested the power supply using an antec power tester and get no errors so that counts out the PSU.

i then came to the conclusion that it was either the motherboard or cpu. I removed the ram and received a 1 long bleep which suggested that the motherboard was good and that maybe it was the CPU.

ive now replaced the motherboard just to double check the theory and again nothing. the fans power up for a second then nothing.

after this i would come to the conclusion that the cpu has failed.

the question is that i have never experienced this before... motherboards, psu and memory failures yes. but not a cpu failure especially intel (processor is a quad core q6600).

can anyone comment? offer advice?

The only way I know, is to test the CPU on another motherboard and or test a known working CPU on that motherboard, eliminate one or the other.

thanks Anthony. Have you ever experienced a CPU to fail and the motherboard to be live still?

Not that I remember, Have you tried striping it right down and inspecting the components, check motherboard for scorched areas, take the CPU out check the pins with a magnifier, re-seat the CPU don't forget thermal paste, check all slots for dust damage etc.... Generally rebuild it, could be something as simple as re-seating the components. also try using known working components when re-building, cables, power connectors etc...if your anything like me you will have components lying about.

If the CPU was bust I don't think you'd have got anything out of the mobo --certainly not a squeak and the fans probably wouldn't work either (although not sure on that one).

Some Mobos have a really annoying feature -- if the power on LED and reset LED tiny small cables aren't connected the whole kybosh wont boot -- absurd though it is --ensure that those pins are connected and then try again.

It's easy to do this BEFORE you put the mobo in the case -- you want to ensure the system boots before wasting time like connecting all the disks etc.

(By boot - at least get to the BIOS. You'll need a monitor connected as well -- not even a keyboard is required).

In all the years I've looked at and built computers the only two times I've had a CPU fail are one when the heat sink wasn't properly fitted, and 2) when I BENT a pin -- and these days its hard to do that - the cpu's just slot in with ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) and you can't put them in the wrong way.

I would almost guarantee it's not the CPU -- although you could have an incompatable CPU / MOBO combination - but I'm sure you would have checked for that possibility before buying.

So you checked all the outputs of the Power supply?

I have seen a CPU failure. It seems the heatsink (store installed) was not connected properly and the user did not know it was running hot. Eventually it quit. Using an inexpensive unit to test might help?

But in your situation, you say it is not the CPU or the Power Supply. The motherboard has been changed out. What is left, the video card? Bad power connector if you did not check them all or external cable? Memory may be bad, but it should try to start up.

PROBLEM SOLVED - jimbo45 thanks checked all the connectors etc.

turns out that the jumper setting for PS2_USB_PWR1 were not enabled causing the mobo not to power up when i plugged the mouse and keyboard in.

next problem... getting vista to work with a new mobo :-(

Glad you fixed it -- those jumpers / little pins cause no end of grief yet very few people ever seem to look for this -- Mind you I've got a few free Mobos like this when someone says the MOBO MUST BE BROKEN -- and they just let me have it !!!.

(Why try VISTA on it -- good time to install W7 on a brand clean new Mobo -- you'll have all the up to date drivers too -- and you possibly could get an OEM copy -of W7 since you are building your own machine).
