Well... Minecraft and some other games need quite alot of RAM; 3GB... Well; you make render-distance "Normal" or "Short" on FPS around 20; Right?
Minecraft can get really resource using; especially when modded or using HD texturepacks.
Enough of FPS talk!
Now, the world of GPU's is big! Lots of cards to choose between. Before I'll start suggesting any card; what's the price-range you're in?

Your laptop will be limited to its integrated graphics. Adding a dedicated, physical graphic card will not be possible.

It would only be possible with a desktop, but may also need other upgrades as well, such as a PSU, depending what you are working with.

Oh, didn't see that it's a laptop... Well, it is possible; but you'll have to be REALLY sure about what you're doing; since you might brake your laptop in the process...

Most notebooks don't have onboard graphics that can be easily upgraded. Yours appears to not be one of the rare exceptions.

The only practical way to upgrade is to replace the notebook.

Sorry.

There are external display adapters, but they don't seem to be aimed at 3D gaming. The ones I see at www.newegg.com use the USB 2 interface - hardly equivalent to a PCI-E X16 slot.

I do not think you can add a graphics cards to a laptop easily. Anyway, Mine-craft uses a lot of RAM (Not so much Graphics). So, If you have that (Good RAM), its good enough. If you want to make the performance of Mine-craft better, you can change some options by pressing Escape while in play, Going to video setting and changing;

1. Graphics - Fast
2. Smooth lighting - OFF
3. Particles - Decreased / Minimal
4. Render Distance - Normal / Short / Tiny
5. Performance - Max FPS

and stuff like that. After you do everything, it should look like this...

P.S. I use Mine-craft 1.3.1
