Is it possible to use my mobo HDMI while using the graphics card?

By this I mean I want to use the HDMI on my board, but I want the graphics card to still be running compared to the board trying to process graphics.

I.E - Plug HDMI into mobo slot, turn computer on, open up Modern Warfare 2, runs smooth because graphics card is handling game --- is it possible?

From my understanding, you can only use one (mobo) or the other (graphics card), but not both.
No mixing of the connections is supported.

Some other newer boards allow onboard with an add-in card, but what the op wants doesn't work that way.
The game would have to be running on the video cards output to get the performance.

Yep. If it's a 1155 / SB or IVY chip, he could use the HDMI out so that it will running off the iGPU.

But to maintain performance, the video card will have to be the primary GPU/monitor.

If it's an older socket, then no - it's one or the other as mentioned.

Are you trying to connect to a Home theatre/TV with the HDMI?

Depending the card you have, there is a thing called SPDIF 'pass through' that allows you connect to the optical port and have the sound 'passtrough' the card's DVI>HDMI output.
