Solved How Do I make my ASUS Laptop Stay Powered Up 24/7

I purchased a new ASUS 64-bit Laptop (with Win 7 Home-Premium).

I wish my ASUS Laptop to be 'on' 24/7 as an Apache Server. It works perfectly now but after several hours, I cannot visit my web site hosted on this Laptop. Altho the Power Lite is lit, the machine cannot be accessed from my router.

I looked over all the power settings (and there are *many* of them), but can't find suitable settings that:

a. Will allow access 24/7 to my site visitors, But,

b. Let the display go blank after several minutes of *my* not using it.

Q:
What are the detailed Power Settings for 24/7 operation without my attendance at the machine, and web site visitors get immediate access to my site ? I don't mind the display going black as long as the machine springs into action when a client visits.

Go to Control Panel>Power Options.

Choose High Performance power plan, set Display to desired timeout, then set Sleep to 0, Save.

Now choose plan again, go to Advanced Settings, under Sleep set Hibernate to 0, Save.

There is also a choice there on the left margin for having it Do Nothing when you close the lid. Make sure this doesn't overheat it.

I checked my Power Settings (as above), and they *are already* what you specified -- but I did them again anyway. Howver, after leaving my machine on overnite last nite (with *no* visitors to my site), I used my development machine this morning to try to visit my site, and had no response. BUT, if I 'tap' the power button (which was still illuminated), then the machine immediately 'wakes up'. Then, I can get a quick, immediate response when visiting the site from my other development machine (a Win XP Pro).

Perhaps, the ethernet network adapter (internal to the LapTop) does not stay awake overnite ???

Hope you can provide further settings for me to test.

Keep the screen awake so you can verify that the PC is not sleeping.

Went into Device Manager, and picked Ethernet Adapter, then > Change Adapter Settings, then selected/clicked my ethernet adapter then clicked on Configure, then was presented with three check boxes:

1. Allow Computer to turn off adapter. (it was already checked - I left if there for now)

2. Allow device to wake-up computer. I 'checked' this

3. Only allow a 'magic packet' to wake computer. (I left this unchecked -- I don't know what this means).

btw, my ethernet adapter is a RealTek PCIe adapter from GBE Families Controller.

So, I'll wait until tomorrow morning to see if I can visit my site.

Its 8:45 am in Alberta now, and I just *visited* my site of the Laptop.

It WORKS !!!

(i.e., the 1st two power options for the ethernet adapter are 'checked', and that seems to do the trick in keeping my machine alive and waiting for client visitors 24/7)

After confirming this for awhile you can mark the thread Solved when ready.

You really should uncheck Allow the computer to turn off power to the Ethernet adapter. If you want the system on 24/7 the network adapter should be on 24/7.

O.K., I 'unchecked' the 'Allow the computer to turn off power to the adapter', and will test again very late today or tomorrow (Monday).

BUT, I tested this morning (Sunday), and it was instantly awake and responsive when I visited my site. However, There were two (successful) visits during the nite (from 'bots' of some sort). Because my Apache access.log showed them.

So, 'something' was keeping the adapter awake all nite. Because, apparently, Win7 didn't turn it off. Or, if it did, it bounced quickly awake.

Puzzling ...
