My computer is a HP slate 500, with 2gb memory, 128gb ssd drive running windows 7 pro. A few days ago my computer began to freeze for no apparent reason. I ran chkdsk/f and it fixed a few things, but the freeze would continue. I ran a full scan of malwarebytes and windows defender, neither showed anything. Last night I tried to run sfc / scannow twice both times the computer froze. The first time it was a 50% the second at 81%. I tried again today and it got to 87% and the screen went black. I tried a system restore point, but that failed. I tried restore from system image and it failed. Tried startup repair three times all failed. I tried system repair disk it also failed. I tried to do a clean install with the win7 pro disk that came with my computer and it locks up at the installing point. Any advice?

Thanks for the information, but I can't boot into windows without the win 7 disk and it only gives me the restore options that all failed or when I try to reinstall windows it locks up as previously stated.. I'm going to try the iso approach when I get home later tonight.

I had the same problem on a previous computer.
It was a memory problem.

Start with the hardware tests in Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot.

The steps lead up to rescuiing files and running HP Factory Recovery or doing the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

You need to be able to boot a disk to disinfect and attempt repairs. Try resetting BIOS to defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS.

If this fails Ultimate Boot CD will boot itself to test RAM and HD, rescue files, even wipe the HD as a last resort to get the installer to boot itself to reinstall.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Computer gave up and only would show unable to find operating system. Downloaded a iso and it would not burn to dvd, burn software says corrupted. So I gave up and went to best buy and their geek squad, final diagnoses motherboard bad. I am expecting a return box from hp on tuesday. Thanks again.

Did you run the hardware tests as suggested which would have revealed this?

Just for the record in the end it was a bad motherboard.
