bought gtx 680 wanna know if my psu is enough. (quick reply please)

i have a 600w coonix it is a dual rail i believe and only pulls 36 amps together and the minimum the gtx 680 says is 38 amps but it also said it was tested with an i7 3.2ghz processor and that also mean a high end board with other high end part. and i only have a fx- 4 core black edition. my mobo is a m5a97. 16 gb of ddr3 ram and one dvd-rw and one 7,200 HDD. so not much of a power drawer.

If you're looking for someone to bless the use of an expensive graphics card with a marginal power supply, you've probably come to the wrong place.

If the PSU fails due to being run close to its rated specs for too long, it can take most of the rest of the system with it.

Stick with Seasonic, Corsair, Antec for your power supplies. There are a few other good ones out there, but these are probably the top 3.


From what I can see, the Coonix 600W has 2 rails at 18A each. For a total of 36A

To put things in perspective, a Seasonic 460W will produce 38A on a single rail. Many of the Corsair and Antecs can also match or exceed this PSU at 450-500W range.
And thats not even considering effeciency.

The 620W BobKn linked has 48A on a single rail, vs yours that 36A spread over 2.


I would look into putting a good quaility PSU in.
Huge fan of Seasonic myself, but have had both Corsairs and Antecs and they all havbe been excellent. (Most are made by Seasonic anyway) The one linked for example would be a nice upgrade.


--Also, if Im not mistaken, that AMD CPU will pull more power than a i3. Someone please correct me if wrong.
And, FYI, the number on the GPUs box that specifies min. wattage and amps is a generic figure and is intended for the entire system. Not just the GPU.

Coonix is not a very reliable brand. a PSU with more than one 12v rail is not much good, just make them cheaper to make.
As was stated, a good PSU id the heart of a good system and I would recommend you look into a minimum of 750W. 850W would be better.

I see you have has many BSODs, could be the bad PSU you have.

You should get a new PSU.. Get at least Cooler Master GX series or Silent Pro series with at least 750W or get Corsair HX 850W Modular if you can.

I agree Quality Psu is a must Vs cost you will end up spending more in the longrun if you don't listen to this good advice given to you

You can get a great 80plus for 100.00 or less depends on what you are going for Brand wise

If you plan on going Sli in the future go Big

If this is all you need then get something 700w 80 plus modular or anything with single rails going higher then 34

It get's the job done no doubt but I have it in another system running less specs which is great and not overkill especially if i add a more powerfull card

The GTX680 is a lot less power hungry compared to past Nvidia GPUs. Plus, most people buy more wattage than they really need. I could definitely see an excellent 650W PSU powering a GTX680 SLI config (long-term, even after some degradation). This is why a good PSU is often recommended over higher-powered PSUs from questionable brands/manufactuters (along with other reasons).

also BSOD were because of bad mobo or ram had it fixed. havent had one since. my other choice would be a corsair HX 750 but thats another $50 so im not sure

unfortunately its the one i have in it since i bought it from ibuypower which i will never do again just at the time i didnt know much and im slowly learning more and more. and using the coonix was only a temporary thing until i bought a new power supply. which would be till thursday this week.

I have read that Jonny Guru rates that power supply as quite good. It really surprised him alot. VERRY tight voltage regulation, handles more load than rated, keeps going strong even when hot. Actual maker of that PSU is Superflower. If I were you, I would start there. You could also go with Corsair. Most Corsairs are made by Seasonic. Either of these would keep your whole system running nice and smooth. I am running an AMD PHII 965 BE at 4.2 G with an ATI HD4850 on a Corsair GS800 (I paid $139 at a best but) Runs without a hickup!

Instead, Id look towards something like these:

Wish I could rep you but it says i must spread some more around. I agree 750w is a bit over kill and is not needed unless running a sli setup like you just said. Nvdia recommends "Minimum of a 550 Watt power supply, (Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 38 Amps.)"

The specs on the Rosewill seem nice enough. It would be more than you'd need for a single (reference) GTX680.

Unfortunately, NVidia's list of SLI certified PSUs hasn't been updated recently:

I'd want something heavier than a good 750W unit for use with two 680s, but 62A may be enough (5A of headroom or so, if the CPU is overclocked).

Buy once, cry once. Spend the money on a good 650W 80+ BRONZE or better PSU for a single GPU system. For a dual GPU system, step up to a 750-800w. No, you probably don't need every watt of power they put out, but you also don't want to be in a situation where you need 700W and only have 650W available. Seasonic is a really good brand because they make quite a few PSU's for other big name companies(look at the Seasonic X750 Gold and look at the Corsair AX series). Antec and Corsair sell reliable ones as well. I used to use PC Power & Cooling PSU's, but they since changed owners and I'm not sure how they hold up anymore.

I picked up the Seasonic X750 Gold while it was on sale for $119 and it is a very well built unit. Full modular, which I wasn't sold on completely until I unboxed it, and more than enough clean power to run whatever I want. Power supplies are one of the components where you buy it and forget it. Buy a good brand, with the connectors you need and rated more than what you need and don't worry about it.....simple as that.

noone is going to say to you the psu will be fine when you have clearly stated the psu is below spec.

I would get a new psu with a single rail or as low rails as possible meaning its less likely your 12v rail will be underpowered.

also make sure it has enough pci-e connectors.

my psu is single rail and I see would only barely be enough at 40 watts which in tturh probably isnt enough as it powers other things as well.

You really need for safety at least a 60 watts rail in my view.

Huh? Modular is a whale of a lot easier, you use only cables you need anf have none just hanging loose. Aside from the main and EPS 12V, I have only 3 other cables from my HX650.

But its your system, go cheap again and still have trouble.:huh:
