Onboard graphics card not working after BIOS update!

Hello all! Please help me.

I purchased motherboard with the manufacturer number of MB.G0409.005 (MB.G0409.005 GATEWAY MOTHERBOARD DESKTOP BOARD SOCKET AM2) on 2/3/12. I had put it into my system and then proceeded to install upgrades from the Gateway website. I saw there was a BIOS update (file: 924G1P11.ROM) available so I tried to update my BIOS. Well, after updating my BIOS with the .ROM file that I had gotten from their website ([URL]http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2283[/URL]), but after that, the on board ATI graphics adapter is no longer working. I tried to contact Gateway with no luck and them telling me that they don't recommend updating the BIOS. I also tried to contact the place where I purchased the motherboard from and they said that they didn't have the original .ROM. The motherboard is also not listed on the Foxconn website either. I am running Windows 7 x64 Build 7601 and I have also tried using a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS live USB and that did not work as well. As far as I can tell, the BIOS will not even recognize it. I am now currently using a NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 graphics card that is plugged into the 16x PCI-E slot. I have found modified .ROM files that someone had done for this motherboard, but I don't want to risk it. And every forum and post I've come across has dead links to ones that someone has made a copy of the .ROM file and uploaded from their motherboard. If you need any information or if I did not make anything clear enough, please let me know. Thank you in advance for taking your time to read this and to help me.

My system is a Gateway DX4300-15e with 6 gb's of DDR2 RAM (originally 8 gb's of RAM, but a 2 gb stick blew out from a power surge, hence why I had to get a new motherboard) with a AMD Phenom II x4 970 Black Edition Deneb 3.5GHz Socket AM3 processor.

Have you tried updating the driver for the on-board graphics?

Yes I have. Even that doesn't seem to work. I've tried straight off the ATI website, the Gateway website, and through the Windows 7 driver interface.

If you mean unplugging the power and taking the CMOS battery out, I didn't think that would work. Would it? I have also read about on INTEL boards, if you set the BIOS jumper properly and create a DOS boot CD/USB and load the .ROM file on there and plug it in to machine, the machine will actually flash the BIOS to the .ROM file on the DOS disk. However, I don't know if that would work with my AMD board because I haven't read a single article about it working with AMD boards and that also takes me back to my original problem about me not having the original .ROM file. And if it makes a difference, I didn't just flash it once, I think I flashed it about 6 or 7 times. I was trying to try different settings on the program to see if that would make a difference, but unfortunately, it didn't.

And just for more information, every time I try to access the Device Manager, the driver for the ATI graphics driver doesn't even show up. Weird...

I would hate to "bump" this thread but it seems I've hit a dead end in my research and I would like to fix the problem, iff possible. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have tried to reset the cmos, but that didn't seem to work either. I feel as if I am at a loss and may end up having to put up with it until next tax season to buy a new motherboard. If anyone else has any ideas, please post and I am more than willing to try!

Is there a need to remove secondary graphics card before flashing?

I was wondering, while flashing the BIOS, should you need to remove a secondary graphics card in order to make sure nothing goes wrong during flashing?

I am curious as to why you thought that the BIOS ROM file on the Gateway website was for the motherboard you bought from the Server Supply website. I do not see any information that would identify that DX4300 system's motherboard as the same model you purchased. Do the new and old motherboard part numbers match exactly?

I suspect your problem is caused because you installed the wrong BIOS file for that MB.G0409.005 motherboard. Unless the two motherboards are exactly the same then you can not assume they use the same ROM file. If this is the case then you are lucky that it runs at all and is not just a big doorstop.

You will now need to find the original ROM file for that motherboard. I would start with Server Supply. If they can't help then you will need to track down the correct file from Gateway support. This will not be easy, as they catalog the BIOS files by the system number, not the motherboard's part number. You will need someone there to match those two things up for you.

Gateway told me that this is the EXACT same motherboard as the one that was in there previously. I found "Server Supply" because a rep from Gateway gave me the link.

I've tried asking Server Supply and they said that they did not have the original .ROM file. I've tried asking Gateway, and they said they could only help me if I either purchase a "extended warranty" and I've tried e-mailing Foxconn and they won't reply.

I have an ASUS M4A785-M MB and an AMD Phenom II x4 950 Black Edition Deneb 3.0 MHz Socket AM3 processor and recently upgraded to an HD 6950 video card. When I installed the CCC for the new video card, I lost the two onboard monitors.

Long story short, I re-installed my W7 using the upgrade option and regained the onboard monitors.

I don't still have the old motherboard, but I did compare not only part numbers, but the layout such as the amount of capacitors, the positioning of the SATA and RAM slots, and so on. It was the same as the old one.

I did flash the BIOS with secondary graphics card in the PCI-E 16x slot, would that have something to do with what I am experiencing?

But then wouldn't I at least be able to use the monitors using a Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Live USB if I installed CCC and nVidia drivers (which I have tried)?

The BIOS flash should not be affected by the secondary video card. To the BIOS it is just another device.

And yes, the Ubuntu test should rule out an OS or driver problem.

You still need to find the original BIOS (ROM file).

I came here from a link in your other thread about flashing with a modified BIOS file. I've skimmed though this thread so it I ask something that has already been asked my apologies. Did you look though the BIOS options for a setting that disables the onboard Video? Or a setting that sets what video device to use? For example my motherboard has an option where you set what order the motherboard looks for a video card. PCIe, PCI, Int. Some motherboards will automatically disable the onboard as soon as an add-in card is detected, did you try removing your add-in video card. I've gone to many different web sites for downloads for various motherboards. They all listed multiple BIOS ROM files, old and new. It shouldn't be that hard to find the original BIOS that board came with. And no, the BIOS doesn't care whats plugged in to the PC when you flash it. The worst that happens, other than a failed flash, is it gets set back to the fail safe defaults.

Well, I removed the secondary graphics card and turned it on and, surprise, the on board graphics card started working. So I replaced the secondary graphics card and now it won't work. I can't find any options in the BIOS for it, other than "UMA Buffer Size", which is set to Auto. Any ideas?

Thats normal operating procedure for a lot of motherboards. You can't use both at the same time, the onboard is most likely automatically disabled when a dedicated video card is detected. You need hybrid SLI or similar to be able to use both at the same time. Once you plug in the dedicated card you'll have to move your monitor(s) to that card.
