Connecting to a smart phone

Received an iPhone 4 S. D/loaded iTunes (for 64bit) and installed.
Connected phone via usb port.
iTunes does not show phone icon; no connection or synchronisation can occur.

I have spent ages looking on the Apple site (boy they are tricky over there!) and the trouble shooter offered didn't help.

This must be a common problem, other must have come upon it.
As far as I can tell it's a conflict problem possible with anti virus (MSE).

What I don't know how to do is: -properly test the usb port (which works fine for remote mouse plug in, any temporary flash drives via a hub) and
- test for what is preventing the two from recognising one another.

If you have met this problem and can recommend a way to address it then 3 hearty cheers!

I remember having a similar issue with an ipod touch, where windows would recognize it but not iTunes... My Issue was the drivers didn't install correctly... I had to unplug the phone from the usb port, uninstall the drivers through device manager, reboot the pc and then plug the iphone back in with iTunes closed. The drivers installed fine and iTunes opened by itself, and the ipod started syncing. Hope it works for you if you haven't tried it.

thank you LuisitO,

pretty sure I've tried that ... but it reminds me that there was some fuss installing the driver for the usb ...
can you tell me what you removed in Device Mnger? I'm not sure what the port number is so don't want to poke in the dark.

Once I've removed drivers I'll re-install and take the one step I haven't tried ... plugging in before
switching computer on.

I believe it was Apple Mobile Device or something related, I also checked in safe mode for drivers that didn't install correctly to make sure but I'm pretty sure that was the name of it.

thx LuisitO,

unfortunately there is nothing like that (mentioning apple or mobile device) ... so the search goes on,
thanks anyway and hope you enjoy the forum which I have found both informative and very helpful.

LuisitO,

I wanted to return to this thread to say thanks!

After using 'View' to gain greater access to Dev.Mnger I found the Apple drivers,
deleted them, re-installed and hey presto ... it worked and now finally the phone and iTunes are synched.

best wishes
