Solved How to extract Wordpad

Very attached to wordpad.exe I saved from an old XP installation.
I like it better than the W7 version.
Unfortunately I lost it after a W7 crash.
How can I extract is from my old XP dvd ?

Of course I could reinstall XP on a spare partition, and copy wordpad.exe, but I fear XP will relentlessly destroy everything on my C w7 partition or even on ALL...:shock:

im sure someone round here may have a copy they can upload for you, i dont have xp so im unable to.
i have had a longish google search and it was a waste of time.

If memory serves me you should be able to find wordpad.exe in XP under the
C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories folder. There's a possibility it may not work along side the Windows 7 version of WordPad. But maybe it will in Compatibility Mode.

Another possibility is if you have Windows 7 Pro or higher, there's a free XP Mode. Perhaps you could set that up and extract WordPad from there.

If XP Mode isn't available to you due to version restrictions there are other free Virtual Machines like VMware Player. You could use your XP installation disk to install XP in that virtual environment.

Having used both XP Mode and Oracle VM Virtual Box, I prefer the VM Virtual Box. I discovered this after paying MS for the XP Mode.

Just my .02 cents worth and with inflation probably even less.

To extract Wordpad.ex from a Windows XP disk

See this
Microsoft Corporation
Type Expand /? (for a list of options) in the command prompt

With your XP disk in the disk drive

Type

Expand R:\I386\wordpad.ex_ c:\Users\*your user name*\Documents\wordpad.exe

Subtitute your CD drive letter for R:

note the space after wordpad.ex_ and before c:\

After some more digging I found an easy solution:
Having no i9nstalled XP I searched the old XP DVD for "expand.exe" and then for "wordpad":
Found the first and wordpad.ex_ as the second.
Did "execute..." and filled in expand wordpad.ex_ wordpad.exe.
Had my beloved old faithfdul back!

Good job barend and pbcopter, I may try that myself. I liked the XP version of WordPad too.
I found maybe an easier way. I navigated the to the XP i386/wordpad.ex_ file, copied to my desktop and extracted wordpad.exe with 7-Zip. Works fine.
