Professional or Ultimate - which to install

Hi all
as a technet suscriber I can finally get my hands on the RTM version. I'm still confused as to should I go for the Professional or Ultimate version.

The Home premium is no good for me as I want to run both an IIS server and have remote RDP available (Home premium only allows you to have an RDP CLIENT).

This might seem a silly question --I've seen lots of "Upgrade" charts etc etc but nobody seems to explain what the basic differences between these versions REALLY are.


Decent networking, RDP server, IIS server, and being able to use the Windows Media center are all a requirement.

The best thing to do is to look over the extensive comparison compiled compared there rather then what is seen on the MS page or elsewhere. Brink posted an excellent comparison at http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/14422-compare-windows-7-editions.html

Personally I would be jumping on the Ultimate here for various reasons since that offers a bit more then the average user would imploy. With the option to download it free already having a paid subscription and having already been running the Ultimate editions from the start.... the decision for most would come down to one if they were downloading directly. :D

I agree with you. The OP is able to d/l thru Technet so why not grab Ultimate? It has all the features he needs and more

+1 i'm an 'Ultimate' fan, anything else would just not seem as good :p

As an IIS user myself Professional would seem the obvious choice but as an Ultimate user, Windows may offer extra updates like they do with Vista Ultimate, you never know :p

I have been planning on Ultimate but would settle for Pro. However, why get Pro when you could get Ultimate for $20. I guess MS will get an extra $20 out of me for Ultimate.

yeah, that may be a good choice for you but the OP is saying he has a technet sub so, to me, it's definately worthwhile getting Ultimate

The Ultimate has the "Multiple Activation" feature enabled whereas you have to get a new key for each Professional installation - so I've plumped for the Ultimate version. Looks like the ultimate version will also get the Language packs earlier as well.

I thought the Enterprise Ed. MAK (multiple activation key) and not the Ultimate or maybe you have a different subscription then mine(TechNet Direct) , I will have to look that up.

I went Pro... I installed on 4 pc's last night. Man I love the 'Get Another Key' link :) I didn't need any of the stuff from Ultimate... If I ever do, I'll just install Ultimate.

The Pro still supports the Virtual PC and XP mode there. The backup feature as well as those few extra items found in the Ultimate edition however may just come in handy later even if you don't have an immediate use this early.

When Vista first came out and I waited in line like everyone else the Ultimate was sold out fast! I ended up with the Home Premium edition there. With 7? Not this time around especially with projects in mind for the Virtual PC as well as the system image and BitLocker features.

- It's ENTERPRISE that has the multiple activation -- still available btw on technet to normal suscribers.

I've gone for Ultimate -- this needs 1 key per machine but you can get several keys anyway.

Professional supports backup as well. Bitlocker will be more important to me when all of my hardware supports it...

UNIX based applications subsystem!
