HP p7 if I get a new mobo do I need to reinstall windows?

Hey, first I'm new to the forum and don't know if this is the right place to put this but....

If I were to get a new motherboard(probably an asrock extreme6) would I need to reinstall windows? I didn't think I would need to but after reading up a bit more it sounds like I might because what came on my system is oem and is somehow tied to the motherboard that came in the pc(pegatron aahd2-hy)?

The first thing to determine is what type of Win 7 do you have? Is it an OEM version that was installed on the PC when you bought it or is it an Upgrade version where your purchased the disk and installed Windows 7? == If it is an OEM, you can not transfer the Win 7 to a new Motherboard. You would need to buy a new version of Windows 7. If it is an Upgrade version, you are free to change Motherboards and install it again, there is no restriction. == To answer your question, most of the time a reinstall is needed when you change Motherboards, but there are exceptions.

If you have a HP system you may have to get all new components and or "SOME" new parts, not just the motherboard.

Some manufacturers use proprietary parts in their system. Like the power supply and even how the motherboard mounts in the case. Along with the headers for the case mounted USB ports and how the rear connectors are arranged.

In any event you will need to reinstall Windows as the copy that is now on your HP system is TIED to HP and will not work on an aftermarket motherboard. So plan on buying a new copy of Windows 7.

Often it's difficult to get everything working right after motherboard change. The main issue will be with the drivers, as you currently have drivers installed for the old computer, while the new will for sure require new ones. you'll need to search for those extra drivers, and also get rid of old ones when you switch.

It's possible with a bit of work. I often prefer to just reinstall Windows and avoid any griefs with possible incompatibilities between drivers.

It is oem and for sure if I get a new mobo I will get a new psu I already checked the mounting points in the case and its standard matx. What components should I look into? I guess if I get a new mobo I can always get winodows 8 for 15 bucks

You can only get Win 8 for that price by using the Upgrade adviser, or whatever it is called, and to use that you have to have XP, Vista or 7 installed on the system.

As to components I'm not sure. Just trying to give you a heads up on putting an aftermarket MB in a Brand name Manufactured case.

You will need a Retail or Sys builder OEM copy of Win 7 or 8 for that new MB.

I already have the promo code for the 15 upgrade. Shouldn't I bee able to install 8 as long as I have my product key from 7?
