hi,

Much like the "what music are you listening to?", "what games are you playing?" and "last movie watched", just thought I'd start this thread to encourage like-minded people to recommend television shows to others.

(I searched the phrases 'TV' and 'television' in the forum search, couldn't find anything like this so I'm assuming it hasn't been done before)

Currently I'm really enjoying Vegas on CBS, some could call it "the new Mad Men". It seems to get better and better with every episode, and it was pretty darn good to start with.

some interesting variations so far, I too watch The Big Bang Theory (but consistently) - it doesn't seem to be holding up as well as Friends did over such a long run, the plot seems to be getting a bit stale :/

Going to watch Vegas soon, but am getting into Justified, Boardwalk Empire, Red Dwarf (again), Gimme Gimme Gimme (great UK comedy)

I did wonder a while back if I should get into watching Boardwalk Empire, are the actors believable as period characters and are the plots good (i.e. gripping storylines)?

I'm not watching TV much anymore. It's being dominated by the so called reality shows and the various comtemporary music related competitions. The boradcast networks have lost their minds. they keep changing schedules, running repeats in the middle of the season, prempting shows with with other shows from other days, running season premiers in different time slots, etc.

The ones I am watching are Bones, Mob Doctor, Revolution, Emily Owens, M.D., Vegas, Arrow, the original CSI, Last Resort, Beauty and the Beast, Elementary, CSI New York, Chicago Fire (when they show the weekly repeat on Saturday), occasionally America's Funniest Home Videos, and Once Upon A Time. On two of the retro channels, I also watch Remington Steele (when there isn't a newer show worth watching on), Wild, Wild West, Emergency, and the Rifleman. Occasionally, there is a decent movie on one of the independents and minor networks; the majors rarely show them anymore.

boardwalk empire is one of the best tv shows i have watched in a long time, also breaking bad,

Cool, I'll check it out. I watched the first season of Breaking Bad and enjoyed it, but I at the time I didn't want my actively airing TV shows to be almost all dramas :p

I'm not watching TV much anymore. It's being dominated by the so called reality shows and the various comtemporary music related competitions. The boradcast networks have lost their minds. they keep changing schedules, running repeats in the middle of the season, prempting shows with with other shows from other days, running season premiers in different time slots, etc.
...

Yeah, I know the feeling :/ All these mid-season breaks and shows hanging in renewal limbo for months on end with no news is getting incredibly annoying, like Burn Notice being mid-season and still no news on if it'll get a 7th season, and the Community season 4 premiere being delayed a month or so... :/
I understand that presidential programs for "choosing the next leader of the free world" are important so delaying episodes of Vegas and Castle and Go On (Vegas has been affected twice now :().

Person of Interest, CBS on Thursday night. It's been my top show since it came out in Sept. of 2011.
...
Nascar & College football.
Alabama 9-0 and heading to a National Championship hopefully... :)

Did the first episode of Person of Interest start with some detectives and a powerful person pretending to be a hobo or something like that? As I think I watched the first few minutes of that and got a bit bored (I was tired at the time which probably didn't help). Well, if you say it's your top show since it started airing, it must be pretty good so I'll check it out again and force myself to get through the start of the first episode and into the good stuff ;)

Fringe is my favorite show right now. It does seem to be past its glory, but not glaringly so. There's still a chance that its last season may wrap up with a reverberating bang that has many people who missed Fringe the first time around coming back to see what the fuss was all about.

Fringe is an X-Files like series but on a whole different level. The acting is superb. The stories are intriguing and compelling. The grand story arc across the whole series is semi-epic. But, unfortunately not too many people know of it or abandoned it after the 2nd season because they didn't give it time, so ratings have struggled. Thankfully, a number of influential and key people recognize the value of it, enough to transcend the profit imperative and give it a 4th and 5th season. It could have enjoyed a rich 7 seasons if it had a stronger following. But, at least what we got is enough to give it some completion (unlike "Stargate Universe", which was killed way before its prime).

Here in the UK we have Fresh Meat, which is a bit like Skins but with the aggression turned down and the humour turned up. There is Hunted to keep one awake and The Paradise (with the delectable Joanna Vanderham) for that feeling-good viewing. Apart from Strictly Come Dancing (can watch this with a clear conscience since I can't dance - pure entertainment), there is not much else on apart from the usual comedians and factual programmes - or perhaps I am getting old and jaded.

I forgot to mention I occasionally watch PBS. There used to be a lot of good programming but the last few years, it has dwindled and is now mostly repeats and begging sessions. Viewer support obviously is not working (otherwise they wouldn't keep ramping up their efforts) so they need to look to other forms of support, such as (gasp)commercials.

The hobo looking guy is ex-CIA. He lost the woman that he loved and didn't know what to do in life any more.

Here's the recap of season 1.
Watch Person of Interest Season 1 recap

“Person of Interest” follows former CIA paramilitary operative, Reese (Jim Caviezel), who is presumed dead and teams up with reclusive billionaire Finch (Michael Emerson) to prevent violent crimes in New York City by initiating their own type of justice. With the special training that Reese has had in Covert Operations and Finch’s genius software inventing mind, the two are a perfect match for the job that they have to complete. With the help of surveillance equipment, the work “outside the law” and get the right criminal behind bars.

When Reese’s skills are noticed by Carter (Taraji P. Henson), a NYPD detective, and Fusco (Kevin Chapman), a police officer who Reese uses to his advantage, they investigate the crimes together and find that the right person, information, and at the right time, is able to change everything. Creators J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk (Lost) have done it a great service to unveil this action packed thriller to the networks.
A computer genius named Finch developed a machine for the government that is used to detect information leading to acts of terrorism before they happen. The machine detects a plot and separates the information gathered into two categories: relevant and irrelevant. Finch, however, discovered that the irrelevant information often led to other acts of violent crime. So, he, before going underground, developed a back door into the system which only spits out the social security number of a central person involved in the crime. Supposedly dead in the authority's eyes, Finch hires John Reese, an ex-CIA special operations agent, who, too, dropped out of life after his girlfriend was killed as the result of a professional incident, and he was dissatisfied with the government's handling of the situation. Like Finch, Reese is officially listed as dead. Finch convinces Reese that working for him to prevent the crime associated with the social security number, he can do what he was unable to do working on the inside. While the two go about this business, they are tracked by the New York City Police Department, who are trying to uncover who Reese specifically is.
