I would like if someone can please help me out with an issue i am currently facing. I try to start up windows after entering my password at the screen it loads for a while then i am faced with my desktop background and icons show up. If i move my mouse cursor to the bottom taskbar to click start it has the loading circle. If i click anything on my desktop that wont work either. i tried several things but i dont want to fresh install as i have tons of data and files that i need to keep otherwise i would have just went ahead with the fresh install. The things i tried were

1. tried system repair, but i get this "windows cannot repair this computer automatically"

2. I just tried sfc/scannow and I got the following message:
There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart windows and try sfc again.

3. i then did the scanow offline command i found it said scanning and then after 20 min i get this "SFC Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation FIX''

4. Memory tool but i can't see results because as soon as i sign in it freezes

5. ctrl, alt ad del dont work screen goes black then i wait till a message pops up and click enter then it brings me back to the desktop

6. i scanned pc with avg and malawarebytes no viruses.

Like i said all help is very much appreciated. I called dell but my protection ran out 2 weeks ago and they want 270 for software help i really dont have that type of money as the mortgage gets taken out and im a little behind if not i would have went that option. Anyway help is appreciated thanks. If you need more infor write in the thread and ill try as i cant really access anything on the pc.

the computer im using is a dell xps 420
ram 4gb
hdd 1tb

update: its still loading very very slow i need to fix this asap please help.

Do you have access to another machine? Can you create a bootable CD/DVD and run this?:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

If you can't do that, check your machine's BIOS to see if there's a memory testing facility there.

If the memory checks out okay you can see if there is a quick hard drive test available in the BIOS. I wouldn't run a long test just yet since you have data there that you need; I'd get a copy of the data first if you suspect the drive might have problems.

Please let us know...

Great!

On to the hard drive. Is there a hard disk diagnotics test available in your system's BIOS?

What brand of drive is it?

You gotta burn one or two more CDs. Seagate's Seatools works with many brands:

SeaTools for DOS | Seagate

Another one is from Western Digital:

WD Support / Downloads / SATA & SAS / WD RE2

Particularly interested in the drive's SMART status (PASS/WARN/FAIL). Both should report SMART status by the time they load up and recognize your drive. Give us a screenshot of the report (same as you did for memtest).

If you decide to run any of the tests they provide, I'd only do the quick or short test until you can report back, or at least until you can safeguard your data. The tests should be nondestructive (data safe), even the long extended tests (but be careful not to run the options that overwrite data). The extended testing causes the drive to do quite a bit of work and if it's not healthy it may be better to grab your data first as the drive may only have limited read/write time left.

Can you run that WD tool so we can get a better idea of that drive's health? When you run it it'll also report SMART status, but you can click on that status and it'll open a window that'll show all the SMART attributes and their current values. Post screenshots of that if you can.

In the case of a failing hard drive, where it's not known how much longer it'll last, there's a decision to be made: try and grab data first or try to make a clone first. Depends on how critical that data is and how much access time you think you've got left for that drive. You also have to wonder if you'll even be able to get a working image/clone from it.

Imaging/Cloning

Here's a link to an iso that you can burn to a CD/DVD or write to a flash drive that'll boot a version of Macrium:

Macrium WinPE

Macrium can be used to create an image of your drive which can be written to another drive. Info on use here:

Copying your data

A link to an iso that you can burn to a DVD or write to a flash drive that contains many tools, including ways to copy out your data:

Try and get us screenshots of WD's SMART report first.

Hmm. Hopefully you only got that because the app isn't capable of detecting your drive. Go ahead and download the following:

http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hirens.BootCD.15.1.zip

It's the same link I posted prior to this post, containing the tools to copy out your data. Burn it to DVD (I'm not sure if it'll fit on a CD) and boot it. There's a mini-version of Win XP on there; run that. At this point you can use it to copy out your data to some other media. But I'm interested in a program called CrystalDisk. It should be found in the Hiren's menu under a subcategory labeled storage, hardware, or something like that. That program should be able to detect your drive and report it's SMART status. Post a screenshot of that if you can.

If your machine still boots (and you know the memory is good) and is usable (even if you've got to wait some time after boot before you can really use it) then you can try and copy your data out of that suspect drive.

You can also download CrystalDiskInfo and run it from your installed OS. Or you can try and run it from the folder on the Hiren's DVD that contains CrystalDisk -- after unzipping it. The portable version is here: Portable Edition (zip) (avoids the ad software that's normally included with the installable version).
