Hello I have a WDC WD500AAKX-001CA0 Hard Drive in my computer but it is performing slower than I expected. Sometimes when doing little multitasking the computer locks up for a few seconds or a program does not respond. Also last night I was watching a movie and suddenly the hard drive begun to write (dunno why) and the movie was lagging :(. So I think there is something wrong with the drive or a setting that is wrong somewhere if someone can help me please. :)

Thanks in advance

Sorry for the late reply but all programs say my hdd has a good health also this new pc isn't even a month old. I'm trying diskcheck tommorow but I'm pretty sure it will not give me any error and I also defragmented the drive didn't help that much.

A fter running the disk check, you may want to run Western Digital's diagnostic program, Data Lifeguard. If you don't use sleep, click the start button, type sleep in the search box and select change when the computer sleeps. You can put never in the sleep box. Just below that is advanced settings, click that and go to hard drive. You can change when the hard drive is turned off.

Well it didn't find any problems on the hdd but I saw that my bios is kinda outdated (Asus P8Z77-V LX) it's version 0610 when the newest one is 1404. I want to update the bios but I never updated the bios on asus motherboards like this. So ...

For updating do I just need to copy the . CAP file to a FAT32 formatted USB
and use EZ Flasher in the bios to flash the new bios ?!
also, if (I say if) something goes wrong like if a bios update fails on my motherboard
can I recover it or don't I have such option ?!

I really want to know answers before I start updating :(

I have an ASUS P8Z77-V Pro board.

I used the ASUS Update utility (part of AI Suite II, through Update -> ASUS Update) to update my BIOS to the latest 1616. This is a Windows program that updates the BIOS while booted to Windows. For me that's by far the most convenient approach.

It does the expected SAVE of current BIOS as well as install the new BIOS file. I haven't explored how to reload the saved original current BIOS file in case of a problem, but I've never had an issue over the years of installing BIOS updates this way which required any recovery.

Thanks for the info anyway didn't update the bios because I didn't have time will do so next weekend. But first I don't think the bios is anything related to this hard drive being slow. Today I wanted to copy a 15gb file to a friends external hdd and it didn't go further than 2% or so it was stuck on calculating ... also the whole os became verryy slow and I had to push the reset button on my computer because nothing did respond anymore. it's weird because most programs say my hdd is ok?! I want to buy a SSD for my C: drive but I don't have the money right now. I never noticed such Hard disk slowdowns with my older computer  So, this is dissapointing

If anybody knows or want to help me further it would be very aprricieted
