Not exactly NZ you can clone / image from any drive to any drive depending on what application you are using for the transfer.

For example I used EaseUS to do for ages to clone drives but it had a drawback in that you could only clone from small to large (capacity) drives or same size to same size.
You could not or it would not clone large to small. Now there heaps of ways that you can transfer the drive's content over and use cloning or imaging - you just need to go through the tutorials for those.

The alignment is purely for making that drive ready for the install.

Some ideas http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/149969-ssd-install-transfer-operating-system.html < you saw the first part.

Hey well I have installed my SSD , everything seems to be going OK. It restarts to the login screen in about 10sec, compared to the older drive it took 30-50sec so a performace boost there. Took ages reinstalling all the drivers.
Windows disabled defrag automatically. I think the 24GB Cache SSD drive has been disabled as well. Samsung's Magic SSD utility had it blocked. So far so good.

Why did it take ages reinstalling all the drivers? This is not XP.

WIn7 is driver-complete in the installer with additional drivers supplied and quickly updated by Windows Updates. You should not change out any drivers and only supply those missing after all Updates are installed.

You would know this if you had followed the steps in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 and not used outdated XP methods when you had the steps in your hands to get it perfect.

Did the Windows update. A bunch of drivers and asus utilities were still missing. I didn't have a factory OEM I had a retail version of Win7. For the record my OEM windows code that came with the laptop didn't work. I had to use the retail code.
Im not worried. Its going fine. It WORKS PERFECT.

In the past when we've had reports that the Product Key on COA sticker failed to activate, the issue has always been resolved after checking that the correct licensed version was installed and the characters were typed in exactly. It will not otherwise fail, based on countless thousands of cases we've helped with here.

So if you have another place you'd like to use the retail key while not wasting the $100+ value of the license which came with the machine, you can change it at Control Panel>System Activation link.

The driver situation would be no different whether OEM and retail since only the activation key is involved there. Any drivers missing after all Updates should first come from the PC maker's Support Downloads webpage.
