Weird startup and shutdown sound; I can't disable nor figure its cause

Lately I have a weird startup and shutdown sound. I've never had Sounds turned on. I went to Control Panel/Sounds/Sounds and it indicated No Sounds scheme. Tried some of the sounds and they work. Changed scheme to Cityscape and tested. It worked. I rebooted. Changed scheme to No Sounds. rebooted. I still get weird Startup & Shutdown sound. Not that it's the worst thing in the world, but I have a suspicion it's the result of a virus. I've run MalwareBytes and SuperAntivirus and have Windows Defender updated and working.

In the panel for System Sounds, did you uncheck the box for the Windows startup sound? Even if you have No Sounds you must still uncheck that box or you will get the startup (not sure about the closedown).

sounds like someone humming. On startup it goes from low to high, on shutdown it is reversed.

It must be the HDD reving up and down. If it really bothers you, replace the HDD with a SSD. That makes no sounds.

I shut down; interestingly no sound accompanied shutdown, now.

I started up and hit F8 repeatedly, but did not get into SAFE mode. I've rarely used SAFE mode and don't know for sure that F8 should work on this Sony Vaio laptop.

The startup Sound played about the time I got to Desktop. Just checked and the Play Sound on Startup is NOT checked.

I'll assume you're joking...........??????????????

maybe not. It is a sound controllable with the speaker volume, which lasts about 2 seconds.

If it is thru the speakers, then it is different. I was just thinking about the HDDs revving up and down because I hear that in my Dell box which is sitting on my desk next to me.
