Netbook won't connect to WPA2 protected network

Can anyone help? I 'm trying to connect my netbook to my wireless home network but it won't recognise the security key. I have Windows 7 32 bit installed. I have successfully connected it to my sister's network which is WPA2 protected, but when I try to connect to my own d-link dsl 2680 router, it keeps telling me that the security key or passphrase is incorrect even though I am typing in exactly the right password. My router is also WPA2 protected but for some reason the netbook fails to connect. My other laptop and my PC have no problem connecting at all though. It's just the netbook that seems to be the problem. It will however connect with a cable and also if I change the router's security setting to WEP. However I don't really want to leave it as WEP as this is less secure than WPA2. I've tried changing the SSID and password but it still won't connect. Before I installed Windows 7 I had XP running on the netbook and then it connected no problem. I don't know why I can connect to my sister's network but not my own. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hello and welcome firedragon mate have you updated the driver for the D-Link onto the netbook? ie installed it from the D-Link CD or even tried the update in Control Panel > Device Manager > Network adaptors > click on it > right click on the adaptor it shows up - update driver software > and it will give you two options pick the auto search.

You may need to have connection available with the cable to do that - try that first.

Thanks for your reply. The D-Link is my broadband router not the internal WIFI card. However, I have updated the WIFI card using Windows Update. Had also tried updating it further using the method you described, but nothing was found. I also have the latest firmware running on my D-Link router.

Problem is it worked fine when I connected to my sister's Netgear router.

To fix this type of problem the firmware on the router usually needs to be updated.

The D-Link site for your router shows a firmware update made in 2010, that would be my first move to fix this type of problem.

Thanks chev65 but the router seems to be running an even newer version than this, version 1.14t. The TalkTalk website (my broadband provider here in the UK) says this is the latest.

That's good then. I'm curious about the encryption being used. With WPA2 you should be using AES encryption rather than TKIP. Which one is the router and the wireless profile set to use?

Hum Chev I am wondering if one of those wireless dongle adaptors would work if the router is up to date.

I suppose another port of call would be to D-Link themselves.

I had similar problems with my TP-Link and a quick call to them sorted it in on time at all.

I suppose the other option is cable the thing. Personally I prefer cable - which prompts me to think that is the router configured to wireless? Mine is switched off at the moment cos all my machines are in one room.

Another point is I often find a reboot after a ten second break of the router clears "logjams" - worth a try - nothing to lose..

Hi firedragon,

Please check in your wireless settings in your router that it is set to WPA2 AES.

Delete all your wireless profiles on your netbook.

It is saying incorrect key so does your router use a long 26 character key.

Re-boot router and then netbook.

Then when you select your router SSID from the list of connections to connect to and it asks for the key remember three things.

1. All letters have to be in capitals.

2. Anything that looks like the leter "o" is a zero.

3. No spaces are allowed.

If it is a passphrase you can enter it as it is written in the router.

Update: Nothing that has been suggested works. The router doesn't allow you to select TKIP or AES, it just gives the option of WPA, WPA2 or both. I've tried all combinations possible, changing the security settings on the netbook as I go.

So to see if it was the router or the wireless card, I have plugged in my old BT Homehub router, and the netbook connects first time. It accepts the password and is connected via WPA2 using AES. No problems. So does this mean that my D-Link router is a bit dodgy?

Please try a reset on the router and re-configure from scratch, please have your isp details to hand ready to re-configure your router in order to connect to the internet and setup your wireless again on the router before doing the reset.

To reset router use an opened paperclip and insert into small hole on back of router and press and hold for between 10 to 20 seconds until all lights on router light up to indicte that the router has reset, then please re-configure with your isp details.

Delete any existing wireless profiles on your computer before trying to connect wirelessly again.

I believe the OP has tried that and all other suggestions doing a reset should clear any settings that may have been inadvertenly set, once the OP comes back we shall see if the reset and re-configuration has helped and we can advise further.

firedragon, I am having a very similar issue with two Windows 7 laptops (http://www.sevenforums.com/network-...dentifies-wpa2-network-wep-2.html#post2267332). You might try installing the free program xirrus wi-fi inspector. I'd be curious to see if it initially identifies your network correctly as WPA2 but then mis-identifies it as WEP once you've keyed in the password. I've seen this happen over and over again on these two machines while others connect happily with no problem at all. If you do, let me know. I'm strongly suspecting and windows 7 issue at this point but have yet to find a solution other than removing all security.
