Solved New i7 build cycles on and off?

Hi folks I need your wisdom. I just built a i7 3770 build using my new case, old 1050 PSU and a new to me single Diamond 6870 GPU. I took my time and really labored over the install. I even went out and got a new Thermaltake 240 sealed cpu water cooler system set up on it. When I turn the unit on all the MSI P67A-GD80 leds light up and my fans spin, my new DVD and Blu-Ray cycle on and all my accessories power up but then about every 5-10 seconds it will cycle off and then attempt to power up in a loop. Does anyone have an idea what's up. Can't get to bios and from what I can tell all the leds are telling me system is fine. I thought maybe because this board comes with a 8 pin CPU plug and a 6 pin GPU plug which I hadn't hooked up that I would run the 6 pin cable and that would be it, but no it's not it. Dbl. checked all connections twice and then looked extra hard at the connections for the power,led,hdd,restart headers and they all appear to be fine. I'm sure it's something simple but could really use your input !

Hum odd you can't get to the BIOS linne is the board UEFI or the old sort?

Have you tried all the usual F keys or DEL for the BIOS?

It's a new old board and it cycles too fast to get to a screen. Tried tapping delete but no joy.

I would try reseating the RAM, try swapping the sticks round as well. Then it might be a good idea to remove all of your PCI connections and slowly add them one by one seeing if the computer boots

Good idea, I also see some have simply cleared the CMOS. I will pull all ram sticks but one as well. This may have to wait till Sunday as I'm gassed after starting at 6:00am today. It least my old AMD 8 core is back up and running in it's new Corsair case!

Sounds like a power supply issue, either it is faulty or it is loaded so it shuts down. Suggest you try another one to rule that out, then strip system back to basics and see if it boots.

Alan, if the ram swap does not work, try using another GPU (which I know you have several). If that does not work, remove everything except what is absolutely needed for the system to post. No HDD, 1 stick of ram, a known good GPU, no DVD, and only the mouse and keyboard connected. If that does not work, remove all the ram and start it. I know it won't start, but you should hear a series of beeps (which is a good thing), which will let you know the motherboard is doing what it should. Also, when you installed the CPU, did you check and make sure there were no bent pins?

If removing everything gets it to post, install 1 item at a time until you find the problem. Does that board have anything like the Asus memory OK feature. The symptoms you describe is what Asus boards do when it is searching for the correct timings and voltages for the ram to boot. It will keep trying until, hopefully, it finds a frequency and timings that will allow it to post.

Steve I removed the cover plate and I didn't notice anything bent but I also didn't have my glasses on to check, just carefully places the chip in and tightened the cover down. Thanks all going to hit the SF thread in the AM then start trying some of these great idea's. Cheers !

Yeah Steve I guess removing all but the essential stuff might be an idea too.

Plus my new board has an unusual DIMM slot application in that it has the 1st sticks in what you would think would be the second set of sticks?

Just to clarify, what did you plug into the boards 8 pin CPU plug?
Does your PSU have an 8 pin plug or the double 4 pin plugs?

Make sure at least 1 RAM card in DIMM1, blue slot closest to CPU.

Latest BIOS update v11.0: '- Update BIOS for IvyBridge 22nm CPU' this would indicate a previous issue.

Googling found not able to post is a fairly common problem for this board, several said an RMA board did the same thing.
If disconnecting everything not essential doesn't allow it to post, then try a bench test with nothing connected and add components and test.

MSI BIOS beep codes

1 beep - System boot successfull
*1beep - Refresh failure - (NO VIDEO) memory refresh failure (bad memory)
2 beeps - Parity error - bad memory
3 beeps - Base 64K memory failure - bad memory
4 beeps - Timer not operational - bad motherboard
5 beeps - Processor error - bad processor
6 beeps - 8042 gate A20 failure - bad cpu or mainboard
7 beeps - Processor exception interput error - bad processor
8 beeps - Display memory read/write failure - bad video card or memory
9 beeps - ROM checksum error - bad BIOS
10 beeps - CMOS shutdown register read/write error - bad motherboard
11 beeps - Cache memory bad - bad CPU or motherboard
12 beeps - BIOS rom file incorrect size - The BIOS ROM file found does not match the size of the flash device

Pulled all ram but one stick (crucial 4gb on approved list) pulled. Same on/off/on loop. Then triple checked all power connections and pulled sata and 3.0 usb cards and adapters with same result. Then let the rig cycle about 3-5 times and got the dreaded 4 beeps from the speaker. I will have to call MSI next week.

Since this is a new build, you might want to double check the locations of your standoffs.

Also check the polarity of the case leads connections to the MB to make sure they are correctly orientated to + and -, some don't matter, some do.

I'll dbl. check the leads.....not giving up on this as no action to return (if ness.) till Monday or Tuesday. At least I can drop my HDD's into the old build in the new case....but I really want this i7 rig up and running if poss. Check any questions or idea's coming.

I don't believe this has anything to do with my loop issue but does anyone know if with 2 dedicated 6 pins running to my GPU card would I need the 6 pin to the mobo? See picture, sorry for shaky pen.

Alan, if you have an extra stick of ram around, try it. And, if you can RMA it back to the vendor, you'll be much better off than dealing with the manufacturer. Been there done that. It really doesn't matter which manufacturer it is. The 6 pin on the board is usually for if you have several GPU cards, to provide sufficient power to the GPUs. For 1 card usually is not necessary. The 8 pin ATX is necessary.

Plus, you have a P67 board. They require a bios update to run an IB. Without that bios, it won't run it. On my P67 board, I had to put a SB CPU in to do a bios update to get the IB to post. You need bios version 11.0 for your board.

Another good thing I think is the led's on my one stick of crucial ram was lighted all my blue leds on the mobo are lighted but when it cycles several times then the four beep come, which tell's me it's a bad timer on the mobo, or at least that's what I'm led to believe....any other thoughts ?

Steve, this is the B3 revision mobo and it's all ready to play with Ivy B. so they say as a preemptive call to MSI qualified that before even purchasing. I have an excellent track record with MSI and man this is a sweet mobo if an older series that I picked up deeply discounted. Keeping my fingers crossed all will work out in time.
